Description Trying to rebound from a previous drawing that kinda was a dud, I decided to go back to my roots, and do something just for fun. So here's a piece featuring one of my characters, Falren, the breaker of chains, fighting against a soldier of his former slave-owners. Falren's a distant ancestor of Dracino and a good portion of the nobility, becoming king after a slave revolt.

I wanted to go for a relatively simple concept, that of good and evil, and also challenge myself with a piece that had some life in it. The more I look at it, the more pleased I am with it, and I'd even venture to say that it's one of my best. After that previous drawing, this is really motivating me to keep going.

Thanks for checking it out!

Edit: Cropped the piece just a bit

I really like the theme you went for with this! The colors contrast very well, and the action of the characters is very dynamic.

Other than the framing thing I pointed out earlier, I do have a couple more little critiques now that I've looked a bit more closely and in depth. I think the poses are very good, but the way they interact doesn't seem to bring the focus anywhere in particular. My eyes are more drawn to the empty gap between them than anything else. The overall "mass" of the subjects also seems skewed heavily to the left, making the focus drawn to the left half of the canvas.

Additionally, and this may just be personal preference, but I think the shading and pretty much everything "non flat" about the coloring seems kind of... clumpy? I know you do soft shading rather than cell shading, but the texture you use doesn't seem to really imply anything about the different kinds of surfaces it's on. I'd suggest in particular keeping in mind that shiny surfaces like that on armor are pretty glossy and have sharp contrast in light intensity, whereas fur, leather, and other soft materials have a much subtler reaction to light.

Regardless of these two things, I think the piece as a whole is very enjoyable to look at!

Thanks very much!

Hmm, interesting, I actually was aiming for the focus to be the space between their faces =S It might seem weird, but I kinda pictured the background as an eye, and I wanted the point of interest to be where the iris would be, which is the point of tension between the two. I guess I got what I wanted, but might have been a bad idea =/ oh well!

I agree with you on the shading. I was a bit stumped about it, since the piece is really foggy and granular. I tried to shade it using vertical line to give it a different feel, but yeah, didn't exactly turn out like I wanted. Thanks for confirming it hehe

Thanks again!

I like that nice jumping sword pose.
And what's this, Drac wearing trousers? That's new. Jk.
Is that scars across his torso and on his muzzle?

Nvm read the description and saw it's Drac's ancestor. But still looks cool.
