**changed the GR a little so now the interior of the stump can be seen slightly, still not ideal but better than it was**

This is well nice man! Theres a really great sense of depth when you look away up into the distance, just great!
And is that finaly a working hashplant model or just a lookalike?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dr-druids In reply to d4nd31o [2007-08-29 19:23:33 +0000 UTC]

cheers man, and no its not a hash plant but you're right it does look a bit like one. Its actually the 'Vitus Agnus Castus' from the Vue content, the one that monks used to ward of the evils of the more fleshy desires (to quote the description)
Since you've mentioned it though I might try to alter the leaves to be more mary jane looking.

cheers for the too

yeah I think the main hurdle is the trees blocking out the lighting

not for this scene man, just the Sun and Global Radiosity

Doc, this is really nice. I like that my eye is drawn into the depths of the image - makes me want to go see what's over the hill. The foreground bark is so perfect. I'd either like to see you boolean an interior so the hole isn't so flat and black or stick a squirrel in there or something.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dr-druids In reply to curious3d [2007-08-29 11:42:33 +0000 UTC]

there is an interior to the stump, I just need to either edjust the lighting or maybe add a very weak light inside perhaps.

I have been fiddling with this scene again in between packing to move house and keeping the kids from running amok with the packing tape. I should maybe have it reposted by tonight

curious3d In reply to dr-druids [2007-08-29 11:46:37 +0000 UTC]

From personal experience, a 5 year old, a packing tape dispenser and a cat make for an fun afternoon. Well, not so much for the cat.

about the image:
I guess I was just thinking that the hole shouldn't go all the way through the tree, but honestly, it's not that big a deal and gives a very farity tale feeling to the work.

dr-druids In reply to curious3d [2007-08-29 11:48:34 +0000 UTC]

CorazondeDios [2007-08-29 09:42:31 +0000 UTC]

how many 3D rendering programs do you have?

also, what is your opinion of povray and Bryce?

👍: 0 ⏩: 3

curious3d In reply to CorazondeDios [2007-08-29 11:35:14 +0000 UTC]

I think terragen handles some things better than bryce - volumetric atmospheres and water, especially shorelines, tend to look much better out of terragen. I think Bryce is more 'scene' oriented, and Terragen is more 'world' oriented. Depends on what type of image you're after.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

dr-druids In reply to CorazondeDios [2007-08-29 11:34:11 +0000 UTC]

I have Terragen, Terragen 2, Bryce 6, Carrara 5, Vue 6, Blender, POV-ray and DAZ Studio.

POV-ray can produce outstanding results but is quite involved learning the scene description language, there's no graphical 3D window by default to 'see' what you're doing you have to use a third party program like Bishop3D for that. Bryce is an excellent program to learn on but I soon took a dislike to it after buying Carrara 5.

CorazondeDios In reply to dr-druids [2007-08-29 15:12:23 +0000 UTC]

I see....
ok, I have terragen, terragen 2, Bryce 5 (never used it) Vue 6 (just downloaded it last night and have not yet installed it -- the free version), Pov-ray. I have not downloaded Daz Studio, but if it is free, I may.

dr-druids In reply to CorazondeDios [2007-08-29 15:27:02 +0000 UTC]

yes DAZ Studio is totally free, and if you have a look around daz3d.com you'll find a lot of free content for it too.

Bryce is very good. better than Terragen

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

dr-druids In reply to Akehnahr [2007-08-29 11:37:24 +0000 UTC]

I don't know about being better than Terragen, its certainly different though. Bryce can do so much more than just landscapes. Its hard to compare the two since they're so different

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Akehnahr In reply to dr-druids [2007-08-29 12:57:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, thats true... but bryce is better during the rendering phase..

yeah not too happy about the tree stump myself. I might redo this and turn the stump around so the hole is hidden.

thanks

It's the mushrooms that really make this one look nice, Almost fairytale-like. Not too keen on the hollow in the tree, but the rest looks good !
