"Are you absolutely sure you're going to be okay?"

"Seriously, I'll be fine." Ariel shifted her weight from one thigh-stump to the other. "Just take me to the convention center and leave me in the queue for registration. Someone will drop me off back home sometime Monday morning."

"What do you do all weekend at these SF conventions?"

"Oh, mostly I hang around in the volunteer's lounge"

"The volunteer's lounge?"

"Yeah, so we have about six people on the committee, and a staff of about thirty, but we rely on about a hundred volunteers for the convention to work. And the lounge is where all the volunteers hang out between doing the work. We've got food and drink for them, stuff to keep them entertained and so on."

"I don't understand. So are you one of these volunteers? What kind of work can you do for this convention of yours?"

"Oh, I don't actually work on the convention, I just help out in the lounge, keeping all the volunteers happy. It's fun."

"So you've got a bag, or ...?"

"No, I've just got the stuff I'm wearing. Someone will let me sleep in their room, they'll feed me in the lounge, I don't need to take anything else."
