Monster Island Buddies is a really hard to explain show. It's Basically someone took all there bandai Godzilla Action Figures and used them as if they were on Monster Island and they could talk. But basically one of the characters Gorosaurus , he says "LOOK WHAT HAPPENED!" Everytime he gets beats up

What references do you work from when making these models?

I seek out images online. But I do have a big collection of figures that are useful for 360Β° visual reference. I happen to have a figure of Gorosaurus that came in very handy for this project.Β

Would you ever consider releasing the models for others' reference?

I like how you managed to capture the somewhat campy and unrealistic spirit of the original character, but also make it realistic and believable. 9001 out of 10!

They made video game character models, and while on the platforms I they games were released are completely incapable of this kind of detailed render, the fact that I am making is that you have caught the essence of the character sooo perfectly here. I can see how your models would move and act and the accuracy to the general design of the creature with the added flare of the textures you give it make it fantastic. You don't go in and 'change something' completely in the guise of 'making it functional', you seem to work around any dysfunctional part of the design to make it work in a sensical way. I'd go as far to say that your renders are probably the best Kaiju related thing I've ever saw on deviantart.Β
So you create these amazing models, Pipeworks does things like render a Mechagodzilla 74 with bending missile fingers.

Thanks so much for such high praise. In defense of Pipeworks tho, I'm sure those decisions were made, or had to be made due to animation purposes, as well as other relevant game-play factors I couldn't possibly name. But yes, I'm a fan of the original designs for a reason. And while I always find a major redesign interesting for many reasons, I usually don't like when some thing strays too far from the original that I love so much. When Jurassic park came out, it seemed the trend was to give all Kaiju animalistic traits, and change the legs to bend the way an animals leg would bend. Β All of that 'realism' brought us the GINO Godzilla in 1998, which was a beautiful realistic giant monster design, just not Godzilla in my eyes. Now, PacRim has started this trend of making them all look, well, PacRim style, which is WAAAAY cooler and more Kaiju to me than making them all look like dinosaurs. But to me, I think the real challenge is to change as little as possible while making it as realistic as possible. And that's what I try to do. Sometimes tho, it's hard not to just go nuts and change everything.Β

Animation purposes or not, I've seen plenty of game companies carry a character's model perfectly, for me, the soul of a character has to be there, and I just don't get that sense with their work. Its like, to me... I attest to the way they do Godzilla and his allies/enemies is how Hannah Barberra did Batman and Superman.Β
Creative liberties are one thing, but when I look at their work, particularly makes it hard considering I know some of the people who are doing the work... I get the sense their hearts aren't into it. Simon even told me that the pipeworks team whined when they heard they had to make another godzilla game.Β
