Description This is a business card I did for the late Jack Hawley, back in the 70s. Jack had a large waxed moustache, and his signature outfit was a three piece suit with a derby hat, a huge amethyst stickpin in his tie, and a one-pound pocket watch on a chain. The "pocket watch" was a small super-precise naval chonometer he had converted by machining a bow and a new crown for it.

The picture of Jack I did from a photo by Laurence L. Bradley (one of a set taken for Jack's Berkeley Councilman Campaign Calendar) using tracing paper and india ink. The text I did with rub-on letters, and the curliques are from a royalty-free Dover Books reproduction of an 1891 German catalog of modular lead type ornaments, done by copying and pasting various small sections.

If I were doing this today, I'd do it all digitally, and put the picture of Jack through steel-engraving-look filters.

Jack had a sly, deadpan, self-deprecating sense of humor, which shows in the motto, in the oversize stickpin and watch, and even in the use of his middle initial (a reference to Senator Jack S. Phogbound, a character in the comic strip Li'l Abner).

Great design work. It's a very handsome card. Perfect for today's 'Steam Punk' look.

I remember the days of Chartpak and Letraset. Still have the catalogs and some sheets. Days when cut and paste was literally cut it out and paste it down. With wax! I have a huge Dover book collection. Lots and lots of electronic clip art.

Thank you. Your remark means that I may use that book for some steampunk cards.

I think I finally gave away my Letraset sheets and my wax stencil art tool kit and other things I hadn't used in years. I may regret it, but a guy I helped move said you always later regret part of what you give away or throw out, with no way to know which part at the time.

You are welcome to look over my clip art collection. I'll send you a list through e-mail. I also signed up with Dove Books for their free sample art. It's just enough to get you hooked. Check them out. [link]
