Description Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux: Ugolino and His SonsJust finished this study and that was challenging! I truly gave my best with this one. I hope it shows! It taught me a lot as well. I'm finding myself enjoying rendering the details even more. It's a good thing.

First of all, this is already a wonderful piece of work, but there are always something we can improve right e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

The thing when coming to drawing still life is that people tend to only rely on what they see and they copy exactly what is in front of them. It's easy to forget that we are allowed to manipulate the image with our artistic visions~ So, a few comments:

-The focal point is missing, a camera captures everything with the same level of details, but every drawing should have a place with the most details for the viewers to focus on. The feet here is clearly the focal point, I would work on everything else with rougher techniques and less contrast, to "de-focus".

-I find that the toes of the left and right foot are hard to separate on the sculpture. This is something that can be entirely improved when you draw it. I would push on the shadings around the areas of contact for clarity.

-Technical-wise, I feel like when it comes to painting flesh (even though you're drawing marbles, the sculptor is sculpting flesh), it's always nice to do a little airbrushing for softness. Even if it's a super muscular man you're drawing, I see too many "rock-hard" muscle renders out there. Even though your painting isn't bad on that area, but some more airbrushing would definitely be a plus~

Thank you for your lovely feedback! You might be right about the airbrushed part for softness. Although, I have had troubles with it being too airbrushy. I didn't like that feeling and I wanted to keep some kind of roughness and traditional-like feeling to it. Not sure if it worked out too well. I'll keep that in mind for the future and hopefully maintain a good balance between both hard and soft brushes.

About the focal point, indeed, that wasn't really the point of this study for me. I just wanted to understand its form (gotta keep it simple for my own sanity haha), but thank you for pointing it out.

Β Thank you for the crit.

Great job on the middle grays and dark tones for sure, and the rendering overall is excellent as far as placement and proportion. The only thing I could say is that you seem to be missing some of the lightest tones. For example, you have the value on the shoulder/arm the same as the light spot on the cheek above but looking at the image the arm is brighter than the cheek. At least on my monitor. Anyway, it looks like a valuable study! I really need to do more things like this myself, I'm sure I would improve quicker. e_e *puts on studious hat*

Aw thank you. Wow, what a good observational skill you have. You're right about some highlights that I've missed. Thanks! <3
