Description I've been working on this for a couple of days now. I wanted to try to create a black hole sucking all the light and planets nearby. This is my first time making a galaxy/black hole so please be gentle on me . I think this turned out pretty well for my first time. I hope you enjoy this as much I do .

Time taken: Few days
Programs used: Photoshop 7.0

Please leave me any input, comments/feedback or +fav very appreciated

to me, theres not enough black for a black hole >.>

Amazing colours I'm not usually a fan of orange but this looks brilliant!.
I love the beam of light coming down too, looks so good

Nice, though, the problems with black holes sucking up light, its that, it does just that, suck up everything, and no light will reflect for you to see it

Also, if a planet or any mass first get one trip arround a black hole or any object with a higher gravitational force it will orbit it forever, until somthing interferes with it.

Some basic astrophysics for you all

Yeah, the problem with most people's understanding of black holes is that they fail to realize what makes a black hole a black hole is not necessarily the mass, but the density and the length of the radius around it where other objects may be effected. If our sun was suddenly turned to a black hole, and provided we ignore the effect of lack of sunlight on Earth, we would still be orbiting normally, right? in simple theory... I mean, the mass is still the same mass of the sun. It's just that once something goes close enough to the center of the black hole, at a distance lesser than the radius of the original size of the sun, that's when stuff starts getting weird....

The only way to really know if a black hole is there is to see anything orbiting it such as light

And here i thought i atleast was a decent artist and you come showing of this great piece , shame on you

That does look quite awesome. One question, is all that light going out or getting sucked in?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CrabTasterMan In reply to WordBearer [2009-12-24 14:14:53 +0000 UTC]

the light is supposed to be sucked in, according what the artist was trying to do (according to the artist's description), but the artist horribly failed to realize that if light was being sucked in, then we wouldn't see the light; we'd rather be seeing a opaque darkness.

*whistles* unless the author pulls out something from the ass of astrophysics and say that's something like Hawking Radiation visually interpreted to within the range of our visible spectrum *whistles*

I wouldn't exactly say that it is perfect, but it's the second best I've seen of this kind yet, so it is excellent for a first try.

The only part that seems a little unfitting to me is the outer ends of the spiral arms. They just end abruptly. Might look better, wehn the get less dense (more transparent) so there would be a floating transition between empty space and the matter being sucked in.

wow... very nicely done.... Good representation of a black hole, I think I like it better then most of the ones I've seen . I saw an actual picture from a black hole, but it was blue and not orangeish.

This is so my new wallpaper.

And I don't care if black holes are black or not, this is neat either way.

hm. well, if its actually sucking in light, then wouldnt you not see the big thing of light being pulled into it? i was thinking it should be a black area instead of a white area.

Nice, man!! Yo, I think the composition will look better...if you extended the swirls of the black hole all the way to the edges! Because...uhhh...there's A LOT of negative space! (meaning background space...) Or at least fill it up with some planets that are being sucked in or something.....

indeed, a black hole is a place of atoms pressed onto eachother creating a huge mass, creating an insane level of gravity, which sucks up even light.

i don't see how this thing is sucking up any light but more likespreading it :/

anyway, looks good

That's really good. I love the colours you have used, you could have easily ruined it by having the wrong colours.

The starscape background looks really realistic, well done.

Your next step is to model a realistic spaceship and have thwt being sucked in, too

Haha, I don't think i'll be making any realistic spaceships any time soon, I really suck at 3D modeling lol. Thanks though

you'll get a lot of stick for calling this a black hole, when physically, it isn't. You'd be better off calling it a "non-existent celestial entity". But a lot of space purists will criticise you for labelling something that it isn't.

Still, not a bad piece, although the stars perspective and the "entity" perspective clash, also i think a little more could be done to prevent or mask the spiral effect (looks a little too "twirl filter" ish IMO). Could do with some variation or imperfections. Planets aren't bad although considering the huge amount of light you've thrown in they ought to be more violently lit (for instance, the close bottom one, it's pretty dull as far as lighting goes). Good colours used although the top sucked beam just feels mundane without similar colour.

Not bad though, keep working

dilekt In reply to alyn [2004-06-26 20:21:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I shouldn't have named it a black hole. Your suggestions are great, you've helped me greatly. I'll spend more time thinking about these things next time.

berserk-sushi [2004-06-26 19:40:29 +0000 UTC]

It's been said but jsut for reinforcement, the center of a black hole is, indeed, black. From a physics point of view it must be so.

The only other criticism I can think of is- the planets don't really seem to be surrounded by the gas in the acretion disk of the hole. *shrugs*

The whole thing is still beautiful, and very well-done

dilekt In reply to berserk-sushi [2004-06-26 20:19:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I regret calling it a black hole, I should have just named it as a wormhole or just a galaxy

berserk-sushi In reply to dilekt [2004-06-26 20:37:46 +0000 UTC]

Nah. It's not a scientifically accurate illustration- but so what? It's well done. And after all, it's in the science-fiction category :>

very nice, star scape background could use some work too uniform, would look better with clusters (use eraser and clone tool too make clusters if you want to) and colour too, but i really like the black hole or the light and stuff going into it since you cant see black holes but anyway the planets should be stretched some, the light is being pulled in and stretched along with the gas and particles, but the planets arnt, doesnt quite fit, great job though love it
