It started with this sketch , and after I finished the sprite on there, I wanted to try and make it Sugimori-like, too. Taking in some of my favorite elements from the art of that time, I created a background. 7 images were used on that. I really dislike that windmill because it took so long. The coloring was fun; I've always wanted to try and make textures like the official art uses. They were hand-painted, too.With this style, the eyes became very... distant. I think it's where the whites of the eyes were placed. It's using the GSC designs, too, because I'm trying to avoid the news of GSDS. I want to be surprised and excited to see the official drawings when the game is released. Being on DA, I'm quickly learning that it is very hard to avoid spoilers. xD

I made it digitally, drawing the characters first and then editing photos together for the background like in older Pokemon cards. I used about 5 photos and the drawing took a few hours. Thank you so much!

Who do you make the background like in a painting?

I used my painting program (Photoshop CS2) and used.. I think 4 or 5 different photos, the eraser tool to make them blend into one another, and then a multiple filters, so it looks like it was painted. :3

This art takes me back to the good old days of trying to hatch that egg and not really knowing what it was. Gah! I like the background too!! Like the good old trading cards. Wow, it's funny how seeing fanart can trigger so many memories. Even though I had a Totodile on my Gold Verison this art reminds me of my trainer. Thank you for drawing this, it made my day.
I can't wait for HeartGold now, when once again I'll be given an egg and will be willing to hatch it.

I wish I could make backgrounds like that! My characters just...sit and gaze into an abyss. lol
Ah, and I feel for you when it comes to the information. I really want to do the same thing, to resist the news so I can be surprised and fully enjoy the games when they come out. But it's such a hard thing to resist now, with Serebii/Bulbapedia so close and my own love for Johto and GSC. So I'm practically jammed imbetween wanting and not wanting to find everything out. 'XD

For backgrounds, I'm not as happy with characters that live in an empty void, and often backgrounds can make or break a good story. I think it helps to tell the story, too, though it's often not thought about.
It's a basic mind-over-matter trial. Admittably, it is difficult, but when I think of how much more I'll enjoy the games when they do come out, the excitement overpowers wanting to know more.

Ken Sugimori is an artist for GameFreak Inc in Japan. He draws and designs all of the official art for Pokemon. (Both the games and the character designs for the anime.)
