Description This is my contribution to the support °jark movement, Jark using his probe as a lightsaber. I'm an ASCII artist, so making an ASCII picture was the obvious contribution. I've uploaded it to the ANSI gallery, as I've used ANSI color codes to color it. The picture you get by clicking the Download link is the ASCII text version, though.

Drawn in JavE, polished and colored in ACiDDraw. The shading didn't really turn out how I wanted, but hopefully it's good enough. I've used a wide variety of antialiasing characters here, I kept j and L which I used in Currywurst and also added Y, < and > to the mix. Still decided to use + for some places and ended up not using 7 or 4. Tried an entirely new technique (new for me, I mean) for the trail of the lightsaber probe, I hope it looks good.

Well, I do have quite a bit of time since I'm no longer able to work (and at the time of making this picture I was only able to work about 15 hours a month), though the amount of energy I can dedicate to art is much smaller. But people greatly overestimate the amount of time and patience ASCII art requires. I've been drawing ASCII for almost ten years so I can do it fairly quickly. But if I want to make a remotely realistic digital painting that takes me months - and the result won't look nearly as good.

Thanks for the comment, it's nice to hear you liked the picture. And don't think ASCII art is something impossible, I'm sure you could draw it too after reading my tutorial.

oho, tää on hiton hieno, vaikka en ymmärä miten jaksat suunitella tämmöst ASCII taidetta... siin mieles et aikaa sin menee ja on MINUN mielestä vähän tylsän kuulosta. hei löysin sut tän ( [link] ) kautta, ja ihmettelin vaan jos lähi tulevaisuudelle on suuniteltu mitään tän kaltaista devmeet:ii?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

diamondie In reply to crovax200 [2006-09-06 07:39:21 +0000 UTC]

diamondie In reply to KoontzPhotography [2005-09-11 13:40:58 +0000 UTC]

A text editor is enough, though I prefer to use JavE , a dedicated ASCII editor. It's just a matter of practice and perhaps the correct mindset.

Thank you for the comment and the favorite! Hard to say how long the piece took me as I don't really watch the clock when drawing. Perhaps 3-4 hours? I've been drawing ASCII art for some eight years now and due to the amount of experience I can do it quicker than most people expect.

diamondie In reply to bitternsweet [2005-08-26 13:21:16 +0000 UTC]

I find it funny how people always associate ASCII art with patience. In the end a picture like this requires much less time and work than eg. a photorealistic full-screen sized digital painting, as there are much fewer things to pay attention on.

Thanks for the comment!

bitternsweet In reply to diamondie [2005-08-28 00:57:12 +0000 UTC]

Well you have a lot more patience than I do. Obviously I couldn't do a photorealistic full-screen sized digital painting either. I like art where you can just blob it on and it kinda just *happens*. lol.

My point being= you have my respect

I think the motion (density gradient) you've devised for this piece worked out great. I am especially fond of the series of commas at the bottom of the head. They're like creepy little alien teeth. The anti - aliasing is top notch, as always.

I like the shading a lot--I might have wanted a soft glow around the probe, but I'm not sure how easy it is to pull that off (and if you wanted it at all)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

diamondie In reply to danielzklein [2005-08-03 15:55:03 +0000 UTC]

Actually my first idea was a glow around the probe. However I couldn't carry it out in a sensible way - blurry things aren't the easiest to realize in ASCII art. A white glow might have been doable, but a green one would have just merged with the probe in a confusing way. My attempts to create the glow led to the idea of the trail, so it wasn't all in vain.

Very nice piece of textart Not sure if his head is quite the same shape, as in most pics, but Jark has +fav'ed it, so he must like it anyway

...says someone whose Deviant description is "Pixel Artist". ;-> In a way ASCII art is just one kind of - usually very low resolution - pixel art. This picture has a "resolution" of about 75x40 characters. The same amount of pixels would make a rather tiny pixel picture.

Thanks for commenting!

well.... it's just figuring out what character to put where....

when I do pixel art it's just a bunch of little squares!

maybe I will try some ASCII art one of these days!
