Rebel XT.. that was my first DSLR. Good to see you're thinking about glass before a new body. That's definitely the way to go.

u know - give me your two cents - i'm killing myself to not buy the 60D so I can instead by the Mark 5 ii - when in reality for that cash i could get a 60D and at least two lenses - opinions? i want to be able to utilize the low light and still shoot capabilities of the Mark and do large format print works for commercial jobs

I would say, if you know you're going to end up with a 5D.. definitely do not get the 60D. GET ALL GLASS BABY! Maybe the 7D would be a compromise for you? (good review of the 7D with high ISO comparisons between that, the 5d and 1D. [link] ) I would say to get your glass first though, definitely. When I had my XT, before I bought the 7D, I had already bought my 17-55mm EFs (knew I was going 7D), my 400mm 5.6L, and the 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro. The difference in my photos was incredible. If you don't buy glass first, the IQ of your sweet new body will be severely limited by what lenses you do have available. You'll get better IQ per dollar if you get lenses, then body. That's my 2 cents.

p.s. that site I linked above is a great page for reviews on any canon or 3rd party canon gear. Usually the first place I look.

i thought the lenses that would fit the Rebel XT i have not would not later fit the 5D? i thought i had to move to a whole new series of lens with that 5D so i couldn't buy lenses that worked on both cameras?

Nope. The only lenses that will work exclusively with the XT, t2i/t3i, 60D, 7D are the "EF-s" lenses. HOWEVER, any "EF" lens will work on both. (i.e. the 100-400mm L lens will work on the XT OR the 5D)
