if that makes sense.

it wasn't me, I didnt help with the outfit, I dont even know the person, I just put it up because its a cool outfit.

I agree completely. The only reason half of them have so many page views is "OMGGG SASUKE <3<3<3<3 ^_^"
While I do admit some fanart/fanfics are good... They are overrated. Eheh.

I agree, especially when it's all crappy touch-pad and MS.Paint doodles and fan-fiction with massive grammar and spelling errors and the writer LEAVES it up there and NEVER revises or edits their writing. [Poor grammar/spelling drives me up the wall ] Shame some people would add that crap to their favourites just because it has something to do with a series or fanbase they like. I know someone who searches 'yaoi' just to favourite all in the category, good or not.

It is very depressing to those who work real hard on their original art and I have nothing against the fan-artist that take his or her time to produce a good piece.

I honestly couldn't have worded this secret any better than you, ST.

I have a whole bunch of original characters who get no notice (I don't care yet, I haven't published anything for reals). But when I uploaded a short comic about Rorschach to my scraps, I got thirty fav's on it in the first day.

I UNDERSTAND THIS ALL TOO WELL.

It happened to me that I submitted something Naruto related ages ago, only 1 thing, and it's almost the only thing that gets faves, it really really sucks, there are beautiful non-fanart things... why do they only fave that ugly drawing?

*sucks* is a point of view, not a fact.
Pageviews are meaningless, and you shouldn't let them get to you.
Sorry to hear its bugging you however, you clearly aren't alone.

ImitationFreak [2009-07-19 04:32:39 +0000 UTC]

You shouldn't let someones amount of page views get to you. It is just a website, I'm sure if your talent is better than theirs then it will get recognized sometime, even if not online.

I think that some of the fan art is nice and great, but why not come up with your own characters instead? Still.. I don't usually fave fan art as I think sometimes it could be more original..
But some of it is still great

k-ee-ran [2009-07-18 15:50:46 +0000 UTC]

Pageviews aren't really the same as comments or favs...and I believe that even THOSE do not make or break a piece of art. :]
The pageview simply means that one was curious enough to click on the picture...maybe they were searching for their fandom of choice, and clicked on a ton of thumbnails, to see what the larger images looked like?
I know that I'm guilty of doing that... browsing for a certain fandom, I mean, to see who else enjoys the series.

I totally agree. If someone spends five minutes drawing a crappy picture on MS Paint of a pikachu, it gets hundreds of faves. If I spend 8 hours on a pretty decent pencil drawing, it gets like... ten. -__-

XD You don't have to like it. Draw something Naruto themed, even if it isn't, and put lots of <3's in the comments and Naruto in the keywords. You will get your much deserved acknowledgement.

Leahh23 [2009-07-17 14:34:35 +0000 UTC]

Well, people will type it in the search bar.
It is annoying though, there's good fan art, and there's bad fan art. Why does the bad fan art have more views/faves than art creating from imagination?
Search bar.

Agreed!
I put my whole heart into anything I do, and it usually goes unrecognised. Probably 'cause I'm no good, pah! So I'll usually get about 2/3 favourites if I'm lucky that day. And then I see people how do little doodles of fanart (and most of the time they arn't even good) and get TONS of recognition! It's not fair.
I will defend those people who do spend hours and hours on a piece of absolutley amazing fanart, because there are some people out there who are very talented at it.

I just disabled my PV counter... it's like a drug, and it's better not to see it, it helps in not being conditioned when trying to be critic towards other's art. Before, I sometimes judged people based on their PVs, and I recognize it's not nice to have preconceptions.

AnnaKlava [2009-07-17 04:18:54 +0000 UTC]

I enjoy drawing fanart nevertheless but I do agree that the crappy fanart that gets lots of views are just indescribable. I know that there's a bunch of people who will fave anything of a canon character be it well drawn or shittily drawn. It's lame but that's pretty much how it is. It sucks when your original work doesn't get that much attention as fanart but remember most people on DA are fanartists.

I know there's another site for original work where people will look at it as much as fanart is looked at on DA but I forgot the name of it, it slipped me for now.

I found it, it's [link]
But it's not as well known as DA is. So popular would be having 50 watchers. If you don't mind that then Storm-artists.net is for you. Original art is appreciated and given more attention there than Deviantart which is more of a home to fanartists.

I agree. It actually makes me sad that people fave one of my very old fanart works. I don't do many, and it was just ONE. So I began making tags as stupid things like "skdfjsldkjflkj".. because I hate how they focus on ONE old work and none of the others.

fudging [2009-07-17 00:52:37 +0000 UTC]

My aspiration is to create the strength of characters that gets a fanbase that forceful. Make characters who people give so much of a damn about that it gets the same sort of aura. Create a series where people can get worked into the creation, so they start wishing a coupling would happen, read it two, three, four times, or want to spend more time with them than is actually available in official material.

I have no opinion on fanart. There is a huge audience for it. It gives credit to the original authors.

I want to be the original creator. Success is harder. And if it's managed, it unquestionably puts you above any imitator.
I'm aspirational, but what's life without dreams?

Celestial-Illusion In reply to fudging [2009-07-18 03:32:48 +0000 UTC]

I see we have similar aspirations.

First one to get their character on a t-shirt wins? Kidding...maybe.

Hope my characters will have their own fandom, too one day! And then fanart of them shall give others views!

fudging In reply to Celestial-Illusion [2009-07-18 08:43:21 +0000 UTC]

CafePress makes that too easy. First one to get their character on 10,000 t-shirts, and it's on

Personally, I'm jealous of those people that draw fan art. Because I am incapable of drawing fan art, I always feel like I am betraying the characters, that's why I have created my own. I guess that for some people it is that opposite.

I get most of my page veiws for fanarts, but most fan-artist (like me) try to put as much effort into their fanart. It's not that we're not creative, some people like something in general, so they'll probably like fanart of it. I hope I didn't sound like an ass here.

dariberri-is-scary [2009-07-16 22:59:06 +0000 UTC]

On an old account of mine, most of my pageviews were from fanart.

Five second, badly colored fan art.

I got around 30,000 pageviews.

Then I went to this account because I realized how much I hated having those pageviews, just for horrible fanart.

Heiderich-Luvur [2009-07-16 22:25:15 +0000 UTC]

Pageviews mean absolute shit.

Those people might be getting page views for being utter wankers, not because people think their art is any good.

BellaNena13 [2009-07-16 22:14:16 +0000 UTC]

Art is art.. All art is inspired somehow,, fanartist just openly express where their insparation comes from.. It isn't fair to dislike or vilify them because people like it and it's good..
