Description (sorry for the big size).

*spirit marks: if a certain spirit bonds with a Vokuwa, the half-wolf gets a so-called "spirit mark", a coloured, magical sign like a tattoo somewhere in the fur of the Vokuwa that represents the spirit somehow through its form and/ or colour (e. g. a flame-like pattern for a fire-elemental).

this is the first sheet for the Vokuwa, a wolfish species that was once a metaphor in the surreal drawings of my youth. later they became a own race in a book I started, and now they are part of Avasir.
there'll be definitely more to show about them

//

Vokuwa, semi-human species of Avasir, the Old World
(Common Tongue: half-wolves, demon-wolves, wolf-men)

element: earth
height: 1,80m-2,50m (depending on subspecies and gender, males are often larger than females)
age: 300 years
habitat: nearly everywhere except elemental areas (e. g. fire plains)
subspecies: 8
physical characteristics: wolf head and tail, human-like body, sharp claws, spines; can have raptor-like hind claws, horns, antlers, backward curved eartips; fur with various patterns.

The Vokuwa are normally known as "half-wolves" to other species. They are neither shapeshifters nor werewolves, but often as feared as the latter, although they're very placid creatures.
Their stamina is legendary, especially when it comes to running or bearing physical and mentally strains. They are very tough and hardy – sometimes a disadvantage when it comes to their relationship with humans.

A big, efficient heart and lungs as well as their long, powerful legs allow the Vokuwa to run as nearly as long as they wish – what makes them very useful as messengers. (Of course this ability is very useful for hunting or tracking opponents too). Although their built is slender and they sometimes look even frail (especially if compared to the massive and muscular Vuon, the wolfish shapeshifters) one should better not underestimate their strength. If provoked or cornered, they know how to use their teeth and claws very well.

Clans
Each Vokuwa is part of a clan and normally lives in a pack that belongs to this clan. The clan unites individuals of certain regions who share the same mentality and are often of the same subspecies. Members of different clans differ in their temperament, some behaviour patterns and traditions.

Vokuwan packs or clans never fight against each other without a very good reason. They always try to stay in contact with near packs and sometimes meet for great hunts, to bring their cubs together or to provide the opportunity for the young to meet possible mates.

Social behaviour and reproduction
Vokuwan packs have a clear hierarchy similar to wolves, although the pack leaders are not chosen with simple fights. The strongest Vokuwa of a pack may be the best warrior, but physical strength is not the only quality a good "alpha" needs. The lykeen (= pack leaders) are normally the parents of most of the pack members, so most of the packs are big families. Their "substitutes" or the "betas" are the highest ranking members after the lykeen, and then the other members follow depending on their abilities, their "profession" and age.
Fights and serious aggression appear very seldom. Vokuwa are always very respectful, and possible conflicts are normally resolved with some gestures and snarling.

While adult Vokuwa choose a mate for the rest of their long life, the adolescents normally prefer to gain experience and explore the secrets of other bodies. Females are only fertile once a year, and during this period the lykana (= alpha female) may forbid other females to meet their mates if she doesn't accept other cubs than her own. If the chances are high that more than the cubs of the lykeen could survive, the lykana usually allows others to mate during this time.
Vokuwa can only produce offspring with other Vokuwa.

cah'la ("professions")
All Vokuwa are to a certain extent hunters and warriors or able to contact the spirits. but having a "cah'la", a duty, a "profession" means to excel other Vokuwa therein. a cah'la is seen as a holy task, the purpose in life of a Vokuwa - something that comes together with great honor and duty as well... or with an exclusion of the pack or even worse consequences if the concerned Vokuwa fails the cah'la.

Diet
Vokuwa are hunters like wolves, although some fruit and other vegetable food they can find in their habitat supplement their diet.

Vokuwa and other species
They often work or even live together with "normal" wolves or the Vuon, at least they normally have connections with such. They are friendly to the Sivyar and neutral to most of the other races, although most of the humans make this attitude really difficult.
Vokuwa are often hunted, killed, driven away or even enslaved by them; and some of them are "trained" to fight in big arenas or in wars.

Your drawing is excellent. Nicely detailed, and not too anthropomorphizing.

thanks! I prefer the wild "anthros" to the more human ones...
