Description This is pretty much what those dream skewers looked like.
Imagine a burning roar coming from the engines as they blast out heat to hurl the creatures through the air, and a grating sonar emanating from the front grill.

I've been enjoying using photoshop for the last few days.
I did something different this time, I drew the lines in Flash and coloured is PS. It works quite well for me, actually.
(Real skewers [link] )

I might use this technique for some Fentil stuff, too.

Well, unlike all the other lifeforms of Darwin IV, this guy does seem to have eyes.

That's true. The eyes constantly looked around. It was creepy.

Yeah. Imagine Darwin IV lifeforms that can only see heat.

Is this based on a real dream? Do you have drawings based on real dreams?

Totally real dream. If you look in the Dreams and Such folder in my gallery there's more.

So, it's a herbivore that feeds of floating algae in the air?

It's actually a scavenger. The blade on their underside lodges into carcasses and digests them externally, they then soak up the resultant goop through pores in the blade.

Oh. But I like how you made the shape. It looks as if it's the size of the helicarrier.

That's roughly how big they are The corpses they feed on are usually much bigger.

I also wish I could actually remember any of them >.<

Great job making it lifelike, especially the shading in the intakes and the reflection in the eyes.

You cranked this out pretty fast! Isn't it great how much dream images capture your imagination? Nothing like being embedded in the story and experiencing it firsthand to make the experience stick.

Yeah. I've been cranking out quite a lot lately. Now that uni is over I've got lots more free time.
It's weird how dreams are so immersive that they feel real, and so you're left with that same feeling of awe as if you'd seen it for real.
My dreams usually so have a story, but of course, when I think about them when I wake up, make much less sense.
There was a dream I had a few nights ago about an asteroid impact, with everyone going to massive underground communal shelters. Next thing I know the impact has happened and it's nuclear winter, then suddenly I'm in a massive red mech made of cardboard shooting someone else in one of the mechs and using massive old style horns [link] mounted on a rock to break them open :S

Dreams are weird.

"using massive old style horns mounted on a rock to break them open"
- Haha, that actually sounds really badass, unless you mean that you were hitting them with the horn as opposed to blowing it XD ... like, imagine the sound blowing the panels of mechs open, especially an almost foghorn-like sound.

"It's weird how dreams are so immersive that they feel real, and so you're left with that same feeling of awe as if you'd seen it for real."
- A couple of years ago, I had spent several days breaking my head over thinking up some plot for a story I was working on. Later, I had a series of three dreams 'answering' my own questions, filling in plot holes, and giving me a lot of extra material. I've tried to repeat the process but not yet succeeded (I haven't tried #4 [link] yet). Still, the challenge afterward is to, as artists, translate and distill the awesome experience into something other people can appreciate in thew same way, eh?

Yeah I used the mech's arm to squeeze the ball and honk it.
That's exactly what it did, there was a fog-horn sound, air distortion and panels came off the other mech from the force.

I've always wanted to try that, though I'm worried about lying face down on the ping-pong balls.
Dreams are good for coming up with cool ideas, and the best thing is they take pretty much no work. The problem with recording them is that there are gaps that your dream sews together you only notice once you're awake, then you're left wondering in the morning how you went from one thing to another. Also, dreams are these 3 dimensional, blurry-edged un-logical fluid things, and it's hard to find a way to accurately convey them in a single picture.

Yeah, that makes a really awesome image in my mind. It would have to be done just right, with taste, eh?

Naw, man, you couldn't lie face down. You have to be looking at a red light, right?

You have indeed nailed the problem with dreams ... they're not a solution to anything by any means. On the other hand they're raw data, just like everything we're seeing anyhow, right?

Demmmmy In reply to whalewithlegs [2010-06-29 17:16:07 +0000 UTC]

yeh true. Still, sounds like a cool thing to try.

Indeed. Ultimately I can't wait for a way to record dreams, if it is possible.
I would sell mine.
