I love how the man seems pretty much at ease with you/the camera while the children are wary, suspicious looking..
At least that's how I think of it. I really love this! awesome job!!!

beautiful photo, it is very sad to see the conditions my Romany brothers and sisters have to live in due to ignorance in Europe..
I just want to note, in reference to what was said by someone about that show The Riches..those are not Gypsies, they are Irish Travellers, or properly they are called Pavee's. They are a different ethnicity, actually a whole different race from Roma.

Thank you very much for your comment. As you said, Gypsies in Europe live in harsh conditions. Especially in Eastern Europe and in Italy they have many problems. There has been an increase in racist attacks against Gypsies recently. However, the conditions in Turkey still provide a safe environment for them. There is poverty here too. But there has never been racist attacks against Gypsies. There is a Gypsy community web site which is managed by my Gpsy friends here in Istanbul. It's URL is: [link] It's in Turkish but you might want to check it out. They have live radio shows at certain times of the day.
I wish you a great day. Thank you for stopping by.

The thing about European gypsies is that they're not travelling anymore. They settled in countries (especially central and Eastern Europe). They still have this "free" spirit, they not very into a work. The most of unemployed people in my country are gypsies, and the most of them like it this way. The Czech Rep. government always have been very kind to gypsies - they could visit school during times when it was very rare around the world (when there was rough race-separating in the USA etc. but Gypsies couldn't move to USA till 90's!). But they refuse to educate themselves VERY often - but even university is FREE in the Czech Republic! They get new flats after they destroyed (really - destroy) the previous one, the other Czech people usually don't (even Vietnamese people, just Gypsies)... Our government don't want to look like racist, so they excused many things to them and that piss off many of law abiding citizens. I'm not saying that's a excuse for attacking them! I and the rest of countries like mine (CZ) just want same rules for everybody and not still being scared of being called racist.
The truth is that they like their nowadays lifestyle - in the roof above their heads are holes, but they have TV, beer in the one hand and cigarette in the other hand. But there are some really nice gypsies family, working ones, with nice houses, educated children and different priorities. It's sad there's just few of them.

I'm inclined to disagree as this is one of my favorite photos I've seen as a DD recently. Beautiful composition here and fits the photojournalism category perfectly.
