Description A shot of sushi with some teriyaki sauce I took and edited a while ago, but never really found the time to actually upload it, so here it is now ^_^

Hmm, sounds like a good arrangement for a bird's eye shot

Nice. Good highlights on the seaweed wraps. I think I would have pulled the focus in a touch closer, to have the nearest roll in focus, rather than the one that’s edging out of the frame, but you’ve got enough DOF overall that it doesn’t kill the shot for me.

Ah, ok, thanks. I do try to work at around f/8 when working this close to have enough DoF to compensate for user error.

Yeah, f/8 seems to be about the smallest aperture most* food photographers like to use. Are you shooting tethered, or just to card?

*I saw a really neat exception once – Rob Fiocca (a food photographer in Toronto; I applied to be a retoucher at his studio but didn’t get the job) has a personal portfolio of stuff that he’s shot from a bird’s eye perspective, using apertures around f/8 to f/16, and lighting the compositions in really stark ways in order to really emphasize the texture of the food and the graphic nature of the composition. I’m not sure if he has any of that stuff on his website (fioccastudio.com), but I tried to replicate the look with some antique cutlery and a handful of oysters once. Not as good as his stuff, but it was certainly a fun exercise.

And I'm shooting off card btw, not tethered, don't have enough space in the shooting area for a full on monitor, and my laptop screen is very bad for any sort of photo viewing.

Bad how? Colour's off? You should be able to use it to check focus, if nothing else.

Not really sure, the color's off, so is the brightness, and somehow it doesn't feel sharp...not really good for judging photos. When shooting tethered, I like to be able to judge at least exposure and focus (and color if possible), but I can't with this laptop.

Yeah, that’s an issue.

Yeah, that's my main problem.

Yeah, I've noticed that. Probably cause f/8 is the sweet spot of most lenses (at least it is for mine), really emphasizing the texture of the food.

To be honest, I'm not really a fan of bird's eye view shots when it comes to food photography...that said, I took a look at his website, and I'm really liking what I'm seeing.
