Just like uploading regular images.. why?
But sometimes if the GIF is too big, you also need to upload a preview image.

Thats impossible with GIMP. You need another software to do that.

You seem to be very informed about this (duh), but I have a question. I'm making an animation, but I'm drawing the frames traditionally using tracing paper. Once I upload them, how do I animate them (like are there any differences in how to animate them) and can I set music to them?

Just use the steps from this tutorial. It's basically the same thing.
if you wanted to save them as a gif, you will get an animation but no music. It's not possible to add audio on a gif. But, If you so eager to create animation with added sound, you should create them with flash. I'm sure there's other tutorial scattered here in deviantart about flash.

Great tutorial!
Im confused on one little bit though.
When I try to animate a picture I have, I make each frame different, but You can still see the frames before it. Is there anyway of producing the animation where the layers disappear as it runs?
I'm sorry if that makes no sense by the way.

It's easy! See this screenshot . (A dialog window when saving .gif as animation.
When you change it to replace, it will only display one layer per frame!
