Edited! New and improved. (I think)The Silent Death. Long rumored to be the ninja's companion, these almost mythical beasts serve a large purpose in the ninja hierarchy. Their snouts are tipped with poison, their wings suited more for stealth and a cloak of sorts rather than flying, a long prehensile tail allows this creature to go where even the ninja fear to tread. All fear the ninja, but the silent death is a being made up of nightmares, and the ninja use this to their advantage.
Each ninja when born is given an opportunity to tame the silent death, sometimes resulting in a lot of dead baby ninjas. But when it works out, when the cads are in the human's favor, he will have a companion, and partner for life. It is unsure where exactly the Silent Death came from. Some say the spawn of old demons and dragons of long ago. Others say that when the mighty Mt Fuji was pushed up through the earth, these beasts emerged from the resulting volcano, born to punish those that deserve to die.

This is really fantastic! The lighting is really well done but what seals the deal for me is how unique it feels. I also love the rendering on the Silent Death. The beast's musculature really gives it that feel of weight and power. I love this painting! Thanks for sharing it with us!

I had dreams about something like this. In the dreams the race were called the "Peace of Death" which was a fancy way saying silence. (When you are dead and at peace, the natural state is silence. My dreams are sometimes very detailed. XD)
In the dream they were always cat-like beings that were very swift, very stealthy, had wings, and had some type of horn. (Though not necessarily like the one on the nose that you have, they always had some sort of horn with a special ability. Poison was one, but others could be used to emit a sub-audible noise that would paralyze opponents at range, or kill them if used up close. I can't remember any of the other things they could do because it was all background in the dream.)
I really like this concept. Are you drawing upon mythology, or is this an original creature that you dreamed up? (If you are drawing on mythology, I'd really like to see your sources ^_^ )
