Description Sometimes, no matter how deserving your victim is of whatever revenge you'd like to take on him...the collateral damage just isn't worth it. That is, if you're any kind of decent person...

An illustration of a scene I wrote. Basically I'tsarlan and his mate, Lyrrehn, were in hiding for a few years after he fell from power. There was a huge price on both their heads, both sides of the raging civil war wanted them dead. But they found some solace and some happiness. Lyrrehn had a baby and things were good as they could be for a while, even though I'tsarlan always knew his enemies would find them, that they'd take him and Lyrrhen and probably kill his son, Tsaro.

.....so yeah, this is that scene where the bounty hunters have found I'tsarlan, and are torturing him to get him to tell them where Lyrrehn is. And in runs Tsaro to try and protect his daddy. Not good.

I love this scene though because it's the point where I'tsarlan stops being a coward for good, and starts becoming pretty hardcore.
I did this piece entirely with my tablet, not with a paper sketch. I am uber proud of myself for it. :3

I'll post the actual writing later on.

Oh--I totally thought I Favorited this, at the very least, last I was on your gallery. Can I say it's just...so emotional, and well-lit, with rich colors, and beautifully drawn. It's one of my favorites in your gallery, and I'm just in awe *__*

Thank you! This one was intense to do, I have a hard time looking at it now. Otska is a rough place for my characters to live, that's for sure. :/

So this is what you meant by "I wish that could be his happy ending but sadly it's not going to work out like that"? I can see it now.

Love the lighting.

Yes, I really wish I could give most of my characters a happy ending. Nicely put.

This is really amazing. There's a lot of power and emotion in this image. Even though they're clearly alien, you can't help but feel horrified at what is happening to I'tsarlan and his poor son, even if he deserves it. This is a really beautiful, dark piece, and I can't help but love it!

Yeah, poor little Tsaro doesn't deserve to be hurt or orphaned, and in the story I'tsarlan is not such a foul creature that he couldn't redeem himself. He was really trying while he was with his little family, and his enemies will be sorry that they didn't leave him alone. >_<
I'm glad it touches you and that the fact that they're not human doesn't impede your empathy. Thanks for the compliment!

The emotion of this illustration is only matched by the skill that crafted its creation. I love this artwork, even if the backstory behind it was so sad it made me cry!

I agree with your statement about revenge. It tends to do more harm than good for the person seeking it. My own main character had to learn that the hard way.

Daroneasa In reply to pLanetstarBerry [2010-11-10 15:49:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much!

If it makes you feel any better at all, there's some righteous justice for the two characters who did this to Itsy and Tsaro. But of course, that's not much of a consolation.
And I totally agree with your statement. The second POV character who is I'tsarlan's enemy also finds out the hard way that revenge is nasty and it often backfires quite badly. :/

Attitudes about revenge almost always are explored, however briefly, with each of my characters because, in a world with all this war, intrigue, and danger...there's plenty of atrocity to be avenged. The question always is, is it worth it? Will it help anything or anyone, really? How far will you be willing to go?

What happened to your character...?

Back when he lived in the demon world, Acolyte killed a man who wronged him. He is so ashamed of the circumstances surrounding this man's death that he barely talks about it to anyone. Those he does tell try to reassure him 'hey, you did it out of self defense-it was either him or you' but he tends to respond that he could have ran away instead. He really did have a chance to run, but opted to kill the man because of all the physical and psychological pain he brought him.

For Acolyte, the experience brought him neither satisfaction nor closure. This feeling led him down a path of forgivness and trying to understand what causes a person to hurt another, and so far it seems to be working for him. I can't remember which character, but someone asks him if he would forgive the person he killed had that person lived and they met again. Acolyte doesn't really know the answer.

That's very deep. What did the man he killed do to him?
I love characters who recognize that running away is an option. And I love it when they reject those rationalizations, those things people always say to make you feel better about what you really have no right to feel better about.
