To Hell With Sonnets

You know, as long as I have been alive,
I have tripped and tumbled o'er my own feet.
My knees are proof of times I collide
With things like unforgiving pavement streets.
So given all these past destructive claims,
I daren't run with very precious things;
Above all, something so dear as your name,
And risk the happy feeling that it brings.

If it flies from my fingers
Like a newborn bird,
Overeager,
Without a want to linger
In my touch…
(Between you and me, it was probably
Because I loved it too much)
If it flew away, like that bird,
Overexcited and adolescent,
And, due to lack of skill,
Crashed without some final word,
Like an Icarus, immature on wax wings…
If I lost your name,
If I lost the happiness it brings…

My heart would fly, too,
And break
Against the floor.

And as I would stoop
And look
And try to gather the pieces,
Mixing as they pierce my hands…
I would find it all to hard
To discern the scattered shards
Of my heart
And of your name,
Because, I do believe, from the start,
They were one and the same.
