It has now become a practice of many such Ersatz(fake) sadhus who do drinks & drugs etc in the name of Lord Shiva, (the hindu god).[wiki link here ][link]A employee of the archaeological department who takes care of this old monument had lot of complaints against this phony priest, He even went on to say that the sadhu has done a lot of physical damage to the monument, He was also involved in some incidents while we were there like not allowing women to enter the temple, talking rudely to visitors, swearing at the archeology guy. ... And there is nothing that can be done to avoid these people !!!
Th cave temple is in remote area of Parner, Ahmednagar, INDIA.
The cave temple was built in 6th century by King Krishnadevraya, around the same era when the famous caves of ajanta[ [link] ] & ellora[ [link] ] were built.

I have met two Sadhu's in my life time. First time I was in Punjab, and the sadhu had a ashram. Second time, the Sadhu was more of a vedic scholar of the Nirmala Panthi (traditional vedantic tradition who run sanskrit schools), and he used to be a university professor, though I think he can be described as a sadhu.
The sadhu in the photo looks like my grandfather, although my grandfather is in America, and quite a smart gentlemen.
Sadhus live a beautiful existance in search of knowing there true self.

He looks very.. sinister. I don\'t know if that\'s because I read your description or not though. Cool... I remember seeing this image on gfxartist.com. It really is an awesome portrait... there's that little something in the eyes that makes it incredibly disturbing. Add to this an excellent composition (I really like how he sticks out from that dark background...) and a light sepia tone and you've got a killer shot.

There is something about his eyes that's so... dim and clear at the same time. It confuses me. At the same time he looks wise and crazy. And that's intriguing, and you've managed to capture him. It's a very characteristic portrait, with history in it.

"ersatz" actually means "replacement", never "fake". just some wiseass words

according to the Hindu mythology, i think lord shiva was creator of 'hashish' or marijuana. that's why they're follower of shiva and often smoke hash.
i think these 'drugs' or i should rather say herbs are more of things of nature that was created to let humans gain a higher conscious as the keys.
but yeah, i know some of these sadhus just take them for fun and goofing around
