Description

My first real walk cycle! I was very inspired by 's recent tutorial, here: [link]
which I pretty much followed to a T. It's very impressive and incredibly helpful!

I used to play around with flash in like 2005 and 2006, but never understood two really important things: onion skinning and inbetweening. What I did was draw one frame, then draw the next (sometimes copy+paste the image and make minor changes).. and well, that was it.

But, anyway, this is the first animation I have done in years! And the first thing I have done using an actual technique. There are certainly lots of flaws (his head hardly bobs!) and some loss in consistancy (for example, his bouncy eye! Those arms, the ears..), but i've got a start and I'm looking forward to doing some more walk cycles to practice. I wanted to add in a tail but just could not get it to look good!

So this was my first time onion skinning and I was really able to understand exactly what it is.. and how freaking helpful it is! Amazing tool!

And then, inbetweening. I understood the concept: the less expressive, 'important' images that go between the key frames. But I didn't understand how to.. well, do them. The timing between each, even how to determine it, and most importantly how to see both what you're working from and working towards, which I guess is also an onion skin related problem.

BUT now I'm really starting to understand how this stuff works!
there's still so much I have to learn, the interface of flash in general, and how to really clean sketches up and keep good consistancy and flow. I was kind of lost when making the lineart so that's also something to work on.

ANYWAY oh my gosh this is the longest discription i have ever made on here.

Go check out and his tutorial! [link]
I honestly didn't think I could do this by myself until I saw his tutorial..
He's an incredible animator! (look at that icon!)

(YEAHHH makes an alright icon too!)

Nice man. A bit choppy, but good for what it is! Keep it up <:

If you have time I can explain methods that come from the same source I suspect Zeurel used: The Animators Survival Kit.
A big tip that could save a lot of the flaws of this animation is to draw the important limbs by themselves. Such as Zeu did just draw the body and legs for each frame and use the same drawing for the head EVERY time, the only bad thing in that is that you'd think that you wouldn't have much animation in the head as you could, that's wrong, what you do is you use the same drawing for the main part of the head: the shape eye and mouth. Then in a separate layer you can pay attention to animating the ears by themselves. This keeps the head exactly the same every time and consistent, and has the animation in the ears. Of course you would move the head and rotate it accordingly, you just wouldn't redraw it. THE MAIN TIP HERE IS DO THE MAIN PART OF THE ANIMATION FIRST THEN ADD THE "FLUFF" SUCH AS THE EARS, ARMS, CLOTH, ANYTHING. Thanks for reading

Ah, yes! Thank you for the tips. I was thinking of doing that with my next one, the head on a seperate, 'static' layer. The ears I did do seperately, in a sence, but they did still need a lot of tweaking. Anyway, I really appreciate the crit, thanks

No problem- one last thing I forgot to mention, you really need to slow it down. I'm gonna "watch" you to see your improvement

Yeah, I used 24 fps like Zeurel did, but mine is much less.. well, fluent, I think part of the reason he looks so fast-moving may also be because his limbs are a bit shorter? And his stride isn't big enough.

Anyway, thank you very, very much for the watch! My updates will be slow since I'm starting college again, but I may be inspired to do more animations on the side, since that's what I wanted to go to school for originally, heh

OH and to change it from ones to twos, (save this separately) delete every other frame THEN duplicate each one. Do it separately just to see what it looks like

Alrighty! I'll definitely look into it. I can also just change the FPS for a quick way of slowing it down, which you can kind of see on my icon.

That's true but won't be so great in good length animations, since you can't speed up if you want to.

Oh, well regarding the speed of the character you're probably right- but you don't have to do it exactly like Zeu, in The Animators Survival Guide it says it's ok to put walks in two's if not recommended. Putting it in twos is just duplicating each individual frame.

ah, yeah? I am definitely interested in purchasing the book, for now I think I can rent it from my school's library – I'm sure they've got several copies.
