Description
งูพงอ้อหลากลาย.
Calamaria lumbricoidea.
The Variable Red Snake is a tiny, nonvenomous snake that occurs in the extreme southern parts of Thailand. Juveniles differ greatly from adults in colouration and, sporting a red head, can be easily confused with the Red-Headed Reed Snake (C. schlegeli), although the latter lacks the ventral black bands. They're a burrowing species and prey on soft invertebrates like worms. This species is notable for that the hemepenes of males and cloaca of females show, most curiously, high variations across populations.
The genus name Calamaria derives from the Ancient Greek κάλαμος (kálamos), meaning "reed" while lumbricoidea is of Latin origin, meaning "worm-like".
