Description
งูลายสาบจุดดำขาว.
Rhabdophis chrysargos.
The Speckle-Bellied Keelback is a lesser known yet rather widespread snake from the Rhabdophis genus, with many records throughout Thailand.
This is a snake with a highly variable appearance. It's base colour and patterns come in many variations and even the bright chevron on is neck, which is otherwise more or less characteristic for this species, can fade with age or is missing completely; some individuals do have whitish coloured supraocular scales, which appear like bright "eyebrows".
Although being a Rhabdophis snake - a genus well-known for its members for being both poisonous and venomous - Peter Verhaart comments that this particular species may be harmless. However, the effects of its venom on humans are still unknown which is why there should be still caution.
