Haha, thank you! She's a narcissist, but her home life is crap. Except for her sickly brothers, her family doesn't give a crap about her.

They sure are. Madeline silences victims for lying about her assault. My MC makes her pay.

Thanks! I couldn't do more contrast because the colours went wacko-jacko, so I had to leave it.

Hello there! You have been visited by a Critique Ninja! We stealthily roam the site, looking to leave thoughtful and useful criticism, as per the spirit of CRITmas . Mind if I just hop on to business, then? Just swooping in and out again - that is the Ninja way...!
First things first: she's gorgeous, and I want to make that absolutely clear before I continue! To create a character we can find sympathetic is very important.
Since this is supposed to be a critique with real criticism though, I'll tell you about the bits that don't really work for me: the first is the values. I can't shake of the feeling there's supposed to be more dark, near her arm - an occlusion shadow from her arm and her shirt being so close together. I would make sure though, that it won't be any darker than the darkest bits already in the picture.
Another thing is the background not really being up to standards, compared to her. That ruler-work is just too straight to fit, the details are unnecessary and the cupboard I think it is - there seems something off about it. I don't think it was all that important to have the room in the picture, altogether.
But still, the character makes up for this a lot. I wish you plenty of luck for the New Year, and a pleasant day to start with. Cheers!

Happy New Year to you, too!
Yeah, have to agree with the background....I should have stuck with the dress only.
Have to agree about the arm...it should be darker. I'd added blue there, but since her shirt is red, that threw me off, I guess!
Thanks very much!

Because of the upload quality, it's really hard for me to tell if your colors were a bit light or if things got faded out on the upload. Either way, I would really recommend upping the brightness and contrast for online posting, because the tones look so muted that we're losing a lot of your great detail work in blending multiple colors into her outfit and hair. (You can use layer masking to add different effects to different areas.) I definitely think it's worth the time for you to bring the dress back out, because it's one of the most strongly colored elements here.
I generally see this as a portrait, so the background is basically backdrop, and the light colors and relatively simple coloring support this. To be honest, I think this would've been better without the bookshelf in the background - the line cutting straight through the back of her head is a bit distracting. If you need that in there for the backstory, I'd lower it so it's more at the level of her neck and doesn't continue all the way through her body.
I keep feeling like there's kind of odd about the chin, but honestly the proportions look great and the shading is convincing.

Thank you for the feedback! Usually I use the contrast thingy, but it completely deviated from the colours of the original or faded out the colours altogether.
What is masking?
I didn't want to cut the dress but this was taken with a camera, and I didn't want the notebook edges showing. Too, when doing it with natural light, it ruined the colours. I had to do it in muted light. I dunno how many I took, but the lines were otherwise all wacko-jacko.
I'll keep the location of lines (if I do a line-background again) in mind for the next compositions. I was wondering about that.
Heart-shaped faces are hard to draw, so if there's something off about the chin, I wouldn't be surprised. I used three references.
Thanks again!

Sure thing.
Here's the guide for PS, I assume it's used similarly elsewhere: designshack.net/articles/graph…
Hmmm, when I've had to take pictures what I do is wait for full daylight (like, as close to noon as I can hit), lay the picture down flat, and then take the picture with the camera held as close to parallel as I can make it. IDK if this will help you, but maybe worth a try?
Sure thing!

I've learnt from bitter experience natural light or laying it flat helps not at all.
I use Gimp. Thank you!
