Hey. What can you recommend when it comes to buying lighting kits like this one?
any specific brands?

I use all photogenics...Id say its mid range price wise and they havent failed me in years. I also use photoflex soft boxes, again mid range. If you are on more of a budget alienbees are pretty good.

I understand the budget thing, but I would still try for quality. Alienbees.com to me are inexpensive yet still a quality product that will last you awhile. Most those things you find on ebay would fall apart soon, or not consistent light quality. (oh and they come in pretty colors)

ok. One more question. what is the difference between umbrella and softbox stands effects? how does one effect the other? is umbrella setup mostly used to wash out the background colors...
well.. i guess it was 3 questions. sorry if I am bugging m8..

well an umbrella will soften the light a bit, but also spreads it out more....I use them for the white background shots. softboxes will do that, soften the light and its more directional.

oh I mean mid range price wise. a mid range mono-strobe would be 500ws I guess. I have 4 500ws and 1 300 and a 125
