Woah this is cool Great timing, the reflections and lighting on the water go together flawlessly, and the angle of the mountains in the background is neat

This is amazing Const. I cant believe I didn't take notice of this one before. I got a couple pictures of Mono in my gallery, they are of foliage and not focused on the lake. I was there in july when the fires were at full fervor, so no real good light. I really enjoyed the scenery there, so rich! Again wonderful image.

Very nice indeed. The still lake really makes it seem a peacefull picture. The snow capped mountains are a cool backdrop too. Great shot.

Terrific landscape. Nicely framed, this wasnt a pano was it? What on earth are those things sticking out of the water? My best guess is petrified trees or something. Great saturation in colors and an overall relaxing/peacfull mood. Nicely composed.

Const In reply to 35mm-SAM [2004-06-05 05:11:52 +0000 UTC]

No, Sam.. this wasn't a pano. Those things sticking out of the water are called tufa towers. (Tufa is essentially common limestone. What is uncommon about this limestone is the way it forms. Typically, underwater springs rich in calcium (the stuff in your bones) mix with lakewater rich in carbonates (the stuff in baking soda). As the calcium comes in contact with carbonates in the lake, a chemical reaction occurs resulting in calcium carbonateβ€”limestone. The calcium carbonate precipitates (settles out of solution as a solid) around the spring, and over the course of decades to centuries, a tufa tower will grow. Tufa towers grow exclusively underwater, and some grow to heights of over 30 feet.) -- haha... think that was a bit too much info... but there ya go. Thanks for your support

Oooh, Mono Lake. I haven't been there in a long time. Very beautiful picture. I love how the tufa stacks form a nice angular contrast to the rest of the photograph.
