Spunky! With the ink and watercolor, do you do the watercolor first and then the inking or the vice versa? I would love to hear more about your process!

I usually do a rough pencil drawing first, which I transfer with tracing paper on special ink and watercolour paper. Then I ink the sketch and afterwards apply the watercolour. When the paper gets wet from the watercolouring, the pores of the paper open (if this is the right way to put it) which makes it more difficult to make the ink lines so crisp and clean.

That's very interesting! I would have thought the exact opposite. Do you use a special type of pen so that it doesn't bleed when you use watercolor on top? Also, how do you handle keeping your whites white? It doesn't look to me like you preserve your whites- do you paint the whites last? Thanks for sharing with a someone who's still learning!

I use a dip pen with a holder inherited from my grandfather and waterproof black indian ink. With the white areas it usually depends on how many layers of watercolour I need. If it's only one or two (like in this picture)I just leave the white areas free. Otherwise, I use chinese white.
