I would title this Creation for it has an almost Biblical connection to it. It can be interpreted in many ways. The Heavens above and Hell or Dante's Inferno below. A though provoking work no matter how you look at it.

Always hard to remember that it's still peaceful ABOVE the storm.

Great stuff! Are the clouds stock from your own photos, or someone else? Or are they custom brushes entirely?

Thanks, I'd love to see such a scene in real life, the great cosmic heavens above, along with a dark world below, the clouds of which can only be seen with the occasional lightning flash...some to think of it, I'd be a little too scared to go below the clouds lol.

lol...nah I don't think I would be scared. I love storms like that..as well as the cosmic above.
I actually have seen something a bit close to that. An approaching dark storm (just like that) and suddenly there was a break above it as the clouds momentarily opened up to shine a very beautiful heavenly-like beam of colorful light down on my very position for about 5 minutes...before closing again.
Something that was ingraved in my memory.

That must have been a brilliant event, I've seen similar sometimes, it's even more dramatic when you see the rays of light shine down on something far away, like some hills or a city...which is still against a dark, stormy background.

I'd say the best parts here are where the (nebula?) meets with the surrounding space, and what you did with the clouds. They have this sort of luminescent appeal without being fluffy. You really emphasized the angles of them instead of the rounded features, which is typical.

Glad you liked the nebula, they are often the most challenging part of any space scene. The clouds were photo-manipulated, but creating that awesome "solid" look that some clouds get from scratch would be very difficult for most.

Yeah, thats what someone else suggested. I couldn't think of what else to add other than a landscape which may have ruined it. If I do something similar to this again I will consider adding more.

Yeah, maelstrom originally meant "great whirlpool" but over time it has earned a reputation of having to do with a lot of chaotic events, like all the ones You pointed out

I couldn't think of anything else to add to the bottom. Extra lightning bolts would have been too much and would look unnatural. I was almost going to add mountains but I wanted this to look like an all - atmosphere planet ( called a gas giant ). I'll try to think of something else to add if I do more.

I love all the details you put into these pieces; they always turn out so well. I like the colors in this since they really highlight the difference between the sky and space. The only critique I have isn't major, but I was wondering if a subtle gradient between the colors would be better.

Chromattix In reply to Darksamu [2007-02-22 07:47:26 +0000 UTC]
I was almost going to add a bit of purple between the red and blue halves. But didn't like the way it looked so the area was made really dark instead. Besides I wanted an obvious difference between the top and bottom anyway.
Thanks for commenting on the details and colours.
