This is absolutely amazing!!! I have this idea of making an version of Oban in Steampunk style, and your character is exactly as I imagine the things on this version!

Congratulations!

First and foremost, I am a big fan of that show, and I do fan art for the series. And I am surprised that one of the shows that I like actually gets a DD, and it's an awesome piece of art. So I'm a person who is commenting and actually has seen the show and loves it.

You for one, have done one of the coolest looking character designs I have seen. The guy really takes off from the tattooed star racer pilots seen in the series and I like that he has a tattoo of an arrow pointing to the place were his nose is at. I love the star racer too, though in the show the Earth starracers have a defined model, though this one kicks booty too. Maybe it's an older model : I also love this guy's sense of fashion. He looks a little like one of those World War flying aces, with the googles and leather bomber jacket. And the details, I love the details in Big Ben...

Oban rocks, you should really check it out if haven't yet. It's one of the few Jetix shows that's great to watch. It's also on DVD.

wowsers. this is spleen-crunchingly awesome. i like the smoke, kinda pointy but floofy at the same time. and of course the big ben is worth about a pint of drool. the intricate detail is really....entrancing in a way. many favs. what kinda stuff is good for practicing detail?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chriscopeland In reply to antimator15q [2007-01-05 06:42:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks man, im glad you like it. As far as what i practice, i mean really details like this are pretty easy seeing that the Big Ben is an actual structure, and on top of that i simply add some little SCRAPES here and there. I think for me doing a building or any type of structure in a plain way makes you realize what is needed so go ahead and start just drawing em , and then you will start to fill in the spaces where they need to be filled through looking at real buildings and stuff like that. I hope that helps, PEACE!

EagleGosselin [2006-12-14 17:37:26 +0000 UTC]

Big Ben really leaps off this page. That's the most detail I've seen you use and it worked fantastically for you. I think for most it would've fallen horribly flat.

The guy's nice and thick. There's stronger lines where there needs to be, including his hand, and the arrow so blatantly pointing out his lack of a nose is hilarious.

You did fall flat on the plane, though. The flag on it doesn't follow the curves and angles of the side of the body. It's right next to the cockpit, but completely contradicts what we see the shape of the thing being. If you'd left the flag out, that wouldn't be so jarring. Maybe put it on the flat surface of a wing instead? In general, the design is much too clunky and lacks a feeling of being based on reality.

I hate to do something as callous as compare you to another deviant, which is really not what I'm doing as I'll explain, but I want to show you this design [link] though you may have already seen it.

The basic layout for your design is feasible, but it takes a certain degree more doohickies [genuine engineering term ] to make it look like it would work for real. Next to Big Ben, it just doesn't work. On its own, it might, but everything around it would have to be as cartoony as the stream of puffs behind it.

I'm not comparing you to *Malaveldt because you're in a completely different area, with specializations all your own.

You could have benefited enormously from some reference materials. Some planes I think might be of interest to this particular design:

B25 Mitchell [link]

Vought Corsair [link]

JU-87 Stuka [link]

P-38 Lightning [link]

If you ever decide to do anything out of this image, those references ought to help you. Let me know if you want to discuss further.

WOW! Thanks for the depth, as far as the plane goes, the issue with it is that when looking at the cartoon, the engeneering on the vehicles are VERY simple, a trait that i was ATTEMPTING to stay true to. I think i might add some things to this piece to show how i do, but that'll be when i have time maybe, thanks again YO!

EagleGosselin In reply to chriscopeland [2007-01-04 07:18:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I didn't realize it was based on something. Sorry! Never mind that, then.

As a pin-up, you really need to not worry about updating it until you need a break from the continuity pages you're busting your ass on.

Any help I can offer, I'm happy. You're more than welcome.

chriscopeland In reply to EagleGosselin [2007-01-04 07:24:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it was based on a Cartoon, however, there is still some validation if what you were saying is that the CONTINUITY of the stylization in the piece was thrown off, then i can see what you were saying, thanks man for the words either way man, it is things like that which i consider or atleast try to consider more when i do a piece, so thanks.

EagleGosselin In reply to chriscopeland [2007-01-04 07:40:12 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yes. That is still a point.

It's good to stop in the middle of a piece and look at it from a bit of a distance. Maybe hold it up to a mirror and look at it backwards, upside-down. You don't always have the time for that sort of thing when you're being stared at by a deadline, but it can help you see the whole piece together and not just the little details separately.

Some authors [Stephen King, for example] have to set manuscripts aside for years before they can actually look at it critically and make corrections. Otherwise they're still just too close to see the forest, et cetera.

Very nice work. Congratz on the well deserved DD. I tried to check as many comments as I could so if this criticism has been said, then I apologize. Blame it on your pooularity and my short attention span. I think you got into the mode of drawing every little thing when you were doing the inside of the jacket. It works great for the architechture and the fighter plane, but the lining of the jacket has me thinking popcorn. I would try to tone that down a tad. I am only being so nitpicky, because this piece excels so completely in everything else. Cheers.
