She is inspired by Disney Princesses and themed after the Crystal Empire.

Costume modeled and made by me, wig styled by me.

Costume details - The ball gown consists of multiple layers, petticoat made from adding lots and lots of tulle to an existing much smaller petticoat. Over the petticoat is the inner layer, uses about 6.5 yards of fabric, it has a cotton burnout panel in the front where the outer layer skirt splits. The outer layer is made from polyester satin, fully washable, and uses about 6.5 layers as well with some heavy pleating and gathering. The bodice has feather boning, and it include panels of the cotton burnout and satin. Every seam contains piping (what a headache!) but the boning proved to not be strong enough to keep the shape so I wear a steel boned corset underneath for support.
The crown, arm bands, yolk (neckpiece) and cutie mark is all made out of worbla, then spray painted. It was my first time using worbla so that was quite the adventure. The crown and yolk are a single layer of worbla and the arm bands are two layers of worbla with craft foam in between. It actually proved to be too thick and a bit uncomfortable, so when I did the commission for the matching Luna set, I only used two layers of worbla. That turned out to be just right in thickness. The cutie mark was delicately hand shaped to get the sun rays to curve just slightly, and as evenly as I could get it. The two purple gems were sculpted, molded, and cast into resin, I just couldn't find any rhinestones in the right shape so I made my own. The shape also works great for rarity (feel free to shoot me a note if you're interested in getting a few). The wig was styled by me and I'm quite surprised it turned out so well, I am no wig stylist. I stitched strings of beads into the wig and braided it with the fibers, stitched the large braid in place on the side, stitched in the large jewels hanging on each side of my temple, and added various little sparkles all over, with the Crystal Empire in mind.
Hmm what's left...oh right the wings! They were made with craft foam, my second set of wings made for Celestia. They basically just consist of 9 gauge wire (which is super hard to cut by the way), craft foam, and hot glue. They are extremely lightweight, easy to take on and off, and they bounce and flutter in the wind. I got told repeatedly at Everfree that everyone loved how my wings moved and bounced, said they were just so animated.

Unicorn horn made by - www.etsy.com/shop/orihalcon201…

I will be making my own unicorn horn, my first two attempts have just failed.

Any questions on construction, need some costuming tips? Feel free to ask! I will try my best to answer~

How did you attach your wings? I'm cosplaying Princess Luna and my dress is strapless like yours so I'm wondering ho you did it? Thanks!Β

It is a wire "u" shape inbetween the wings that slips between your dress/corset and back. Usually a corset helps support it better unless the wings are smaller, then a regular dress is fine.

What kind of wire/how thick of wire did you use? I'm doing it that way but I'm not sure how heavy the wings will turn out and how heavy duty the wire will have to beΒ

Chochomaru In reply to CookieCrisis [2014-03-18 15:28:48 +0000 UTC]

9 gauge wire, for wings the size of what I had, I wouldn't go thinner than that. You can buy it at hardware stores like Lowe's, you'll need wire cutters though.

Where did you get the large sheets of foam for the wings? I went out looking today for foam for my Luna wings, and sadly couldnt find any big pieces :/

I've only seen the rolls in white and black, they're in the foam section at JoAnn's on the bottom shelf, but they also sell out often. Pretty sure they're usually priced around 8.99 and they are 60" rolls. If you view this picture - chochomaru.deviantart.com/art/…, the luna on the floor, her wings were made from about 5 sheets of the 12 X 18 size in dark blue. I can't make the wings much larger than that with those sheetsΒ but they are still pretty large in that size.

Oh, i didn't know that! Thank you! I did find a big roll of foam at Michaels this last weekend, but it was so thin, i didn't know if it would work.
I'll have to go to JoAnns :3 thank you!

How'd youΒ Make your dress?

Chochomaru In reply to PikoUtatane-Vocaloid [2014-01-08 01:52:41 +0000 UTC]

I combined a few different patterns I picked up. The skirt and bodice are two different pieces, and the 'poofyness' is created from a petticoat and large hoop skirt. I think the skirt has a 6 yard outer layer, and 6 yard inner layer ontop of the petticoat and hoop skirt. The bodice shape is kept by a steel boned corset I used underneath. But the patterns I used were just basic prom dress and costume patterns that had the right shapes I needed.

do you have any tips for a fluttershy themed masquarde cosplay?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Chochomaru In reply to PikoUtatane-Vocaloid [2014-01-12 01:07:36 +0000 UTC]

Just stay true to the character, Fluttershy I feel is very conservative in her ways so she would have a long formal dress and a tasteful top. Flowy fabrics would be key for her, just look around some patterns at the store and I'm sure you will find something that inspires you.

what about her bangs?

Chochomaru In reply to PikoUtatane-Vocaloid [2014-01-13 22:25:22 +0000 UTC]

Dealing with the wig is up to you, I think a nice hair style pulled up with some well sculpted bangs would look nice, but plenty of Fluttershy cosplays have just straight wigs that look fine too. =]

Do you think if Ill make more narrow and long foam wings (like to the calf) it will hold ok? I'm scared that they will flip or be too heavy. Yours loos soooo amazing!!

Oh, yeah I can see where you may be worried about it collapsing on itself. It will most likely need a full wire structure on the inside, or like a large upside down U shape with 9 gauge wire. Layering the foam for the feathers will help with structure too.
