Description I feel this thing is in serious need of an overhaul. In the years since I first put this together, I have tweaked and streamlined and refined my approach entirely, and these steps no longer reflect how I personally make these. But as I already have enough things on the go, redoing this'll just get added to the 'shit I will get around to eventually' pile. So you folks get to deal with this ugly thing until Chimera stops being lazy.

If the download doesn't work for you, NOTE ME with your e-mail address (unless you want your e-mail address to be visible to everybody) and I'll send you the file.

A Note on Selling These: Yes, you may, so long as you provide links to this tutorial for other people. Spread the dragony love, people. Spread the dragony love.

The tutorial says not to use wire for these, but it can be done. Sort of. You have to cut out a bunch of the steps to make it work though.

Industrial-Pop has a simplified-for-wire-use wing diagram here .

Line-of-Birds has a journal entry with some information the more inexperienced beadworker might find useful.

Miryl has gone and knocked out a variant design over thisaway which is worth a look-see too for you wire-working folks.

And if, after all that, you decide you want a real challenge, take a gander at this incredible thing by Rrkra

If you find anything screwy with it, or any parts which you don't understand or want clarified, let me know.

2011-03-14: My third DD! I will read every comment and do my best to reply, even if it does take me a while to get around to them all, and I appreciate each and every fave. Much thanks to FantasyStock for the feature.

Other people's dragons can be found here .

Rydiathedragon432 has gone and actually taken up/completed the unofficial challenge to make one out of tennis balls, and I am indeed duly impressed.

(Eclipse broke all my old thumbnail links and I'm finally fixing 'em.)

Good luck to you. So far one other person has done it. I hear the biggest issue is punching holes through all the balls.

I haven't made one of these in years after doing near on a dozen for friends and family in a relatively short space of time.Β  About a month ago, my MIL asked if I was still doing bead stuff and would I make one for her to give as part of a Christmas present.Β  Having procrastinated, I am now sitting here looking at the size 8s I've retrieved from my stash and trying to remember how many rows there are in the body.
Your little dragonlets are still going strong in the UK ChimeraDragonfang Β

Glad to hear it. Been quite a while since I made any myself too; I've been focusing on other types of art the past few years. Should break out my bead stash again...

I did this with string first. (let me just add that I haven't done any beadwork of this complexity for years.) It took a long time, mostly because I suck at beading in general and I had a little trouble with the weaving in the wings. However, I then tried it with wire, and it worked beautifully! I love this pattern, and you are awesome for posting such a nice PDF and everything!

What a delightful little dragon. Sadly I only had one decent needle. I pondered your pattern for a bit and starting at the tail picked up all the beads for the body at once. At the tip of the nose, I turned and I started back thru each row, adding the legs and claws at the appropriate rows. For the wings I picked up all the beads, except the little wing tip beads, turned and went back thru the rows. I added the little tips as I zig zag stitched back thru the "spokes" in the wings to tighten them up. Thanks so much for posting this pattern. Something cute to make with all my leftover beads.

Everything on one strand in one go? That's impressive. I've done that once or twice for other pieces, and it's not something I'm in any hurry to do again.

absolutely beautiful! I want to make one of these for my wife. Is there any bead size in particular you used? It would be an amazing ring!
