Description Modeling is finally done - this is the first texture test. Still a long way to go. Im not happy with the frame or cab yet, and I still have to texture all the red and green hoses... Comments on colors always welcome!

Thats actually kinda what I was thinking also... Its tough with max's layer system to build really complex materials, but I think the vraydirt is a great idea

Yeah, i prefer to make diffuse textures for anything. But, smooth sometimes ruines the UVs, so it's useless. (well, if you make crease 1.0 for an edge with a problem, it will save the UVs, but ruins the smooth. Haha.)

Thats hard. I love the modelling.
I dunno what software you using but i'd say add an Ambient Occlusion map on top of your texture
to add variation to the truck.
Apart from that i'd add dark mud, rust to the lower parts to make it look believable.

Looking forward to seeing the finished model. Great job.

Good idea - Im playing around with multi pass rendering to get all the effects I want for the final - Ill def see what I can do with a deeper ao pass

With the cage around the front wheels make it look like it is unable to steer. And there's no fifth wheel for tugging a monster trailer.

Other than that, this is amazing!

Im having a hard time figuring out how to attach a trailer, so Ive left that part off for now.. the wheel cage turns with the tire

how do the front wheels turn, it looks like those bars around them will limit ther motion alot? but other than that its amazing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chiaroscuro In reply to zGriDz [2010-12-17 22:22:21 +0000 UTC]

yea, they turn - the guards in the front are attached to the wheel hub so they turn with the wheel. This thing is so long the turning radius is like 100' tho lol

Ridiculous. Is this thing supposed to pull skyscrapers out of the way of tornadoes and earthquakes?

Awesomeometer rates this over mother trucking 9000.

I think the cab fits perfectly. I don't think I could think of a better one. And the red and green on the hoses is cool, but it needs to be a little more worn and beat up, and with some copper thrown in, I think it would be perfect.

yeah, damn, i jsut sit and start at that thing

although have to agree with the other guy, the tires seem kinda off. maybe they are just too thin for a vehicle that large. Dunno.

I think there is a reason why they dont make trucks this big.

SiathLinux [2010-12-17 05:23:49 +0000 UTC]

Man this thing is massive.. I'd think the frame needs to have some rust and be a hard metal looking material, maybe even the look of the paint they use to encapsulate rust...which oddly enough is about the color of the cab color you have currently.

The tires and rims look excellent by the way.

chiaroscuro In reply to SiathLinux [2010-12-17 22:28:09 +0000 UTC]

I agree, right now the frame is way too clean - Im working on a much improved map for that right now

Kharnage [2010-12-17 05:23:10 +0000 UTC]

How long did it take you to unwrap? Or are you using box maping and tiling texs?

Looks /awesome/ btw.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chiaroscuro In reply to Kharnage [2010-12-17 22:26:04 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Im cheating, and almost all of it is box mapping with tiling textures - Im going to unwrap the cab and some select detail parts so I can paint custom maps for them tho.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kharnage In reply to chiaroscuro [2010-12-18 02:20:19 +0000 UTC]

It still looks good man, I couldn't tell. I think you'd only need to unwrap if you were coating on grime in specific places or what not. Would be hard to use floating alphas on a model of this caliber.

Okay the cab's red... The first thing I thought of is Optimus Prime. Sorry.

But the textures are just amazing. I get the feeling that this machine should have a more dirt on it.

For the life of me the Tires don't seem to fit to me. But then I have never seen a truck the size of a locomotive before.

Really I just stare at it thinking, just how would that monster work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

blacknight71 [2010-12-17 03:46:26 +0000 UTC]

That is nuts! The cab has an evil look to it and also the way it is set up ortherwise is amazing. Overall the textures are going nice with the rig and if you can find a way to 'age' a few parts may set it apart but that is just me saying that not really saying you should. This would be a monster on the road to see and my first comment says it all. Also the colors are great in my opinion.
