How much detail gets covered in when you do this sort of thing? Are the back faces mostly primitives?

When I do this kind of stuff I really try to not cover up any detail, so that I dont spend time modeling stuff that wont ever get seen. Generally I start with primatives, and slowly replace them with high detail work... that way I can pass over areas that dont need to be detailed and leave them low rez

holy smack you really getting some detail into it now WOO~
i also really like how you interconnect the pipes if you know what i mean. mesh-wise. i really cant think of how that can be done off the top of me head O:

Incredible.. Jus jaw dropping detail.. How many poly's is this? I've been trying to produce 3D assets for my own comic, but I'm torn between detail and functionality, Given that I'd have to have entire street scenes render at a reasonable rate without my computer dying. I've been doing a train but it's nowhere near this detailed and is coming in at 60,000.

For instance, my "bolts" are just 5segment half spheres. lol. Yours appear to be full fledged awesomeness.

Thanks man

I gotta be totally honest that this model is full on overkill Id say go for functionality... Modeling every single detail is loads of fun, but unless I render extreme close-ups of this thing at like 2000px wide you cant see half the detail I put into it. Go with simple geom, and try to get away with texturing as much as you can

you have a collossal amount of patience man.

im struggling at the moment to force myself to do low poly pre-viz. This is just ridonculous...

Patience is all it is man Previz is fun because you can be totally sloppy about it. I usually start with cylinders and just kinda copy and scale them all over the place - Put on some awesome tunes, grab some coffee and get in the zone

yeah i fall out of the zone waay too fast, unless im getting paid, then its significantly easier

but im working on it. Practice makes perfect

i should probably get some awesome tunes, maybe that will help. What do you listen to?

ha, thats funny - I have the exact opposite problem.. Im all into my own stuff, but have a hell of a time with paid work Your right tho, practice makes perfect

Tunes are the best for 3d - I prefer electronic stuff with good layered beats, but really anything that you can get into is perfect. I just like to put on my headphones, crank it up and forget about everything except what Im working on
