I have to congratulate you on having the guts to present an image an image that manages to stir the viewer to express a strong political opininion.
Much of the work presented on DA is technically excellent and aesthetically pleasing to the eye, which is fine, but art also has the ability to get people to think about their place in the world, and in this case, how the decisions of a few can affect the many.

You could put a number of different flags against this image.

Great work,
The photo manipulation really adds to the meaning of this piece.

doh, I was going to do a photo shoot sort of like this in a studio and then stumbled upon this, although I'm going to be using a bright light to reflect the image of a US flag off of one of the eye pieces of a gas mask I'm getting in the mail. I know that it may not be the most original thing in the world. I'm still going to do it but I hope that you don't think that I'm copying your idea. Good work by the way.

good work... very professional looking. The message is very strong... and In some sence I can agree with it... but in others... it feels like you're pointing the finger. I don't think we, as a nation, are the source of the problem... I do feel we're not necessarily helping at present... but I do feel that we're trying. I think using "america" in a generalized way like this is very stereotyping of us and therefor not very accurate. I realize these are my opinions ... just like this piece is yours (or not)... it could just be "a" message... but not necessarily yours.... but in any case... it causes you to think... and to react... and therefor it's a good piece

I'm not getting into a "screaming debate" with everone here but America and Bush are not the problems. If the terrorist in the middle east hadn't blown up buildings in the US that held thousands of people (from all over the world mind you) we wouldn't be in this war that we are in. It's crazy...the so called "great" countries of the world claim that America doesn't do enough, doesn't step in enough, doesn't get involved enough to help the countries that need help (such as the tsunami relief victims or the Aids epidemic in Africa)...however when it comes to getting rid of a man in power who killed his own people in mass genocide proportions, everyone says we should stay out of it and mind our own business. Make up your mind. If America is expected to help, then we need to be able to do just that. There are a lot of women in Iraq right now who are relieved that they can walk down the street without the fear of being beaten to death for speaking their minds. Everyone is allowed their own opinions...and this is mine. I just don't agree with the mind set that all war is bad...that's how most, if not all, countries and cultures began.
From the great words of Metallica's Don't Tread on Me - "Liberty or death, what we so proudly hail
once you provoke her, rattling of her tail
never begins it, never, but once engaged...
never surrenders, showing the fangs of rage
don't tread on me
so be it
threaten no more
to secure peace is to prepare for war"

Well spoken. It's amazing how much Bush is criticized for actually being proactive and DOING something, while Saddam gets a pass for killing millions and violating 17 UN resolutions over the years, not to mention the oil for food scandal he led. And whose military went into action after the recent tsunami disaster, to help the victims?

People do indeed need to make up their minds and quit walking the fence.

None of this applies to the piece here, btw, just replying to ya

I concur. People need to decide whether or not they need us. As one of the most powerful nations in the world, we have the ability to help, and that's what we're trying to do. (And when I we, I mean Bush and his administration.) I can't say that I agree with everything they do, but I'm not about to call him filthy names. We're trying to HELP. Before people criticize, they need to understand exactly what's going on.

Didn't mean to rant, I was just agreeing.

I agree with almost you said... but I'm portuguese, and I wonder why States didn't strike Indonesia, when they occupied East Timor, a province of Portugal, in 1975 (sorry my bad english)... Why?? $$$$$$??? Oil? Why states decided to strike Iraq to protect Kuwait? $$$$$$$$??? NO WAY (sarcasm)!!! I still saying that are more Nations (UK, France, Italy, Germany) that are the same shit... like USA!! (I know that you're American, and I know that are many citizen's in America don't agree with Bush and the their politics) But Korea, Vietname??? are they really needed? Politic and Economic interests suck's...

stacyc In reply to AngelofDistress [2005-01-28 20:35:28 +0000 UTC]

I confess that in my opinion we should have stoped the invasion by Indonesia. It had nothing to do with oil. We have all the oil we want up in Alaska. During the Vietnam War we had such political backlash from the public and media about war in general. We needed time as a country to heal and no one was willing to send troups anywhere. We (America) can not correct every injustice in the world. There are things in our own country that need fixed as well. But when we finally step in and fight for a people's freedom that is not even our own - with only the support of a few other nations - instead of accolades for saving others and doing what's right for the human race, we get called nasty names from those that don't understand or those without the resorces to fight or those in opposing countries who are too afraid to fight.I don't see anyone ganging up on Australia and they are fighting right beside us. There are so many terrible and horrific things going on in the world right now but without the aid of ALL countries we cannot possibly make them right. It will take a world of people that care and are willing to sacrifice - even their own lives if necessary - not one of people who want to ignore the problems and hope they go away.
