I originally had no idea people hated Oshy lol.
I mean, W2 was my very first Pokemon game (although I had played Stadium 2 before too, albeit both on emulators since I don't have a console ;w; ), so I wasn't really experienced in stats and all, but I used to consider Oshawott the strongest of the three because of it having only two weaknesses.

I remember Oshawott, and this comic ensured that he was always my starter in Black and White.

I know this comic is old... But man, I remember seeing this somewhere, and I still love it. It's also gotten a bit famous too, and I heard somewhere this comic actually made Osuwatt more popular. I was actually shocked when I heard people hated Osuwatt, since it was my favorite of the Unova starters, and as a Japanese American by birth who got "Otter" as a result in a personality test, I especially like it. I always chose it in every gen V playthrough. Now, I have been debating who should get Osuwatt in my game novelization fics I'm thinking of, Hilbert or Hilda, but this comic and the colors (which is the reason here too) have always been a reason for giving Osuwatt to Hilbert (though the reason I want to give it to Hilda is that, again, I chose Osuwatt; and who gets Osuwatt kind of determines who is the "real" main protagonist, mainly since Cheren and Snivy are a team-up made in heaven, and I discovered my concepts have a dearth of main female heroes. I thought of giving both of them Osuwatt until I thought that it would work better for the first gym if each got a different starter. Plus, my personality for it works great as a hero's Pokemon to disprove N's notions about Pokemon.) Ironically, it turns out Tepig eventually became the misfit of the group. I wonder if this is a thing for water starters? I mean, Popplio is going through the exact same thing. To be honest, looking back, water starters always have looked kind of derpy, but that's part of their charm.ย

Man, this is... this is so touching. I felt sad for Oshawott when nobody picked him, till Hilbertย came & picked him. I always pick Oshawott as my Starter for any Pokรฉmon game from Gen V & up, & I always call him Goku, I don't know why but I always do.

As someone who absolutely fell in love with the cute little Oshawott, this kind of broke my heart xD I know lots of people think it looks stupid, and I've even seen one person say they hate it because it's name sounds like, of all things, Auschwitz, but I loved it from the very second I got the little bobble-bodied toy in a Happy Meal (which I got because I wanted the toys, not because I'm a kid... cuz I am in fact an adult), and it was the sole driving force behind me even starting to play Pokemon- I wanted Oshawott that badly that I finally picked up my very first Pokemon game. I chose it in a heartbeat. and was overjoyed to get one in WonderTrade in X, and I spent no time at all choosing it when Professor Birch gave me the Unova starters to pick from. When I started a Nuzlocke of Black (using an emulator), I had a very hard time choosing Snivy over Oshawott (I intended to play it different than I ever had, from playing as the boy character to picking a different starter) after picking Oshawott every time I played White.
Even though Froakie has since become my favourite starter (and people hate Froakie, too, it seems), Oshawott is a very, very close second and still has a place in my heart as my very first Pokemon and my very first piece of Pokemon merch. Cuz I didn't have any growing up and I didn't have a way to play the games (hence why I never did until I was 18)

...Wait, people hate Froakie? Last time I saw, people loved the Froakie line, if only for Greninja. I often saw that initially people thought it was pretty derpy looking though. At least before finding out about the existance of Greninja. Then again, if it weren't for Greninja, it probably would have been rather unpopular.

People in the beginning really hated Froakie for its design, yeah, and now people hate it BECAUSE of Greninja. They see it as "overrated". You know how things can get popular, but they hit a point where they get "too" popular, and then people start to hate it because it's mainstream and you're "uncreative" for liking it.
Also it's everywhere in the WonderTrade, so that contributes to the disdain people have.
