Description Walking a path to a waterfall, I found several small trees with these little fellows on the young branches. At first I thought it was a fungus, but I stopped and watched, and sure enough, it was moving, very slowly.

I've seen one of these once before, floating on a breeze, and the person I had been walking with at the time thought I was insane (it had floated away before I could get them to see it).

At this waterfall, I blew on one, and tiny tufts of the hair blew away, so I wasn't going to touch such a fragile creature for fear of hurting it, so I didn't get to see a face or legs. Unable to identify it further, I've taken to calling them "fairydogs," because they look like they would make wonderful pets for fairies.

Upon further research, they may just be wooly aphids, though the pictures I've found of those aren't quite the same. So who knows, maybe these guys were really fairy pets

Wow...that really does look so magical! (They may have been fairy's pets...you never know!)

That doesn't really look like a wooly aphid to me.

I showed it around to other bug enthusiasts and they agreed it was a wooly aphid, so... *shrug*

So, i'm looking at this picture with Woozle of ~woozalia and my 8 year old son, Benjamin...

Woozle says, "it's an alien!"
and Benjamin comes right back with, "No, they can't be aliens or else they would have lasers!"

Well if this particular species isn't named yet maybe you could get it officially dubbed as fairydog in common even if they probably would name it after its host plant in latin.

These don't look much like the wooly aphids that I've seen before.....but I bet ladybugs would eat these too, if only due to mistaken identity.

There are apparently a lot of different kinds of woolies - they name them by the trees they live on.

Are you sure it's not just seed fluff from the trees? It looks a lot like the floating tree fluff we get from some of our trees here, which sometimes looks like its alive.

CatharsisJB In reply to Karnanyd [2007-06-20 21:16:55 +0000 UTC]

I know, we have cottonwood trees around here too... nope, wasn't tree fluff. I sat and watched it for a while and it was definitely crawling, not getting blown by the wind

That's just... creepy. I have this phobia of bugs, so as pretty as it is, it freaks me out. I like the name Fairydog for it though.

Ferret-X [2007-06-20 19:42:31 +0000 UTC]

Hmm...maybe the fairies would like them as pets for the same reason ants do...

Even if they are wooly aphids, I like the term 'fairydog' much better.
