Well, I can't speak for the whole Tahno-lovers part of the fandom, but for me he was simply a very interesting, complex character.
At first he was a jerk, even more, a total douchebag - yes - this was my first impression of him. Still, he had the best VOICE ever and really interesting look, even (or - especially) when he was doing his "creepy faces". Then he lost his bending and it turned out, that it was the only thing he had, he was nobody without it. And it touched me the most, when he forced the smile with "see you around, uh-vatar" - it was great, it showed (for me) that he isn't only a perky boy, he has feelings somewhere deep inside him and he actually cares. And for me he was hot, in his own, peculiar way. xD And it looks like I have a thing for creepy, not so obvious characters...
