yeah, i should have my original sketch and neat lineart for it somewhere, but i prefer (usually) to only post the finished version. (though look in my scraps for sketches for some of my other work)
if you're looking for something to colour, i've released some of them under a creative commons licence for anyone who wants to play with them...

Yes, I was think of coloring it. If you don't mind, could you send me the lineart for that pic? I will give you credit if I do color it and submit it. Thanks.

hmm, not for this particular pic, sorry (for me once it's finished, it's finished), but you are absolutely welcome to tackle some of the linearts which are in my scrapbook, e.g. [link]

Very cute young lady with a nice outfit. Just wanted to say that I really like your art style. A fantastic mix of anime and realism. I always look forward to seeing new work from you!

thanks
i think any manga/anime influence is indirect rather than explicitly intentional - i'm influenced by other artists on dA, and there is a fairly strong Japanese-inspired undercurrent that runs through the site at second or third hand. (though i did study the history of manga at university in japan - so, so much more boring than you might expect!). on the other hand, i don't want to go for total realism either ^ ^;

Golavus In reply to Caregan [2012-12-30 16:50:24 +0000 UTC]

Well we're all slaves to our inspirations and influences aren't we, no matter what kind of artist/writer you may be? Indeed there does seem to be a primarily anime tendency here. I just feel you've developed a very unique art style for yourself. You have great talent and it makes me very jealous, given how I can't draw worth a damn.

Caregan In reply to Golavus [2012-12-31 09:46:43 +0000 UTC]

when i started off, i couldn't draw worth a damn or worth anything else either! i just started a long time ago and slowly, slowly learned to draw. i've been posting on dA for 5 years, and was drawing solidly for 10 years before that before i dared show anyone my stuff online!

i'll concede that i have skill, but not really talent - i always lagged behind in art classes at school and envied the people with actual natural talent who could just draw without thinking about it. all this is just practice

I've always had this nagging feeling that there was something about your drawing style that looked but i didn't want to say. Now, however it seemed like you noticed too in your recent pictures. the old way of drawing noses seemed a little too round and large and the eyes seemed really slit like, so i love the more detailed proportional nose and eye design cause this is indeed beautiful.
Although i have to ask, not being verse in art speak, is art nouveau what Kingdom Hearts uses cause the Hair style, eye color, shoe type and various old style writing and stain glass-esque background all remind me of it lol.

Caregan In reply to clean1and2 [2011-10-02 08:46:47 +0000 UTC]

i'm afraid i'm not versed in kingdom hearts style, so i don't know if they used an art nouveau theme or not... art nouveau (also known as jugendstil, secessionism etc. depending on country) was the dominant artistic style from about 1895-1910 or so, before the minimalism of art deco.

i agree that some of my more recent pictures have different style eyes to my older work, but i think that is because they are more cartoony and less realistic. my older pieces were probably more anatomically correct because i drew naturally sized eyes and noses - we just tend to exaggerate the size because they are so important to us when reading expression, emotion etc.

Actually you can imagine what happened... I didn't see much of your "Art nouveau Kate". All I saw were:
"Les yeux bleus
Elle a les yeux bleus
Comme une profonde mer bleue..."

Did you do the geometric shapes yourself or use some sort of template? I would love to be able to make something like Art Nouveau or at the very least be able to design a decent looking border.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Caregan In reply to damntwistedperson [2011-06-14 08:23:29 +0000 UTC]

the geometric shapes i made in adobe illustrator, but the intricate flower patterns you can just see within the shapes are stolen directly from the great mucha himself. i have to say that illustrator was incredibly frustrating to use, and next time i will use a pencil and piece of paper!

I really love that kind of dress. Well, I wouldn't wear one often... but I think they're so pretty. The whole outfit is adorable <3

Caregan In reply to Rurouni-Taki [2011-06-11 16:24:50 +0000 UTC]

i did wonder if i should add more to her outfit, like a loose cardie or something over the dress, but when i drew it i thought it was fine by itself (my favourite bit of her outfit though has to be her squashy slippers/shoes)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rurouni-Taki In reply to Caregan [2011-06-11 16:46:20 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, cardigans usually do go well with that kind of outfit... but I agree that it looks fine like that.

But... an accessory that kinda serves the same purpose as a cardigan ( visually ) and isn't as bulky, if you wanted the top part of her form to still look sleek, would be a nice sheer scarf across her elbows and behind the back. Or maybe a smaller one loosely around the neck.
Maybe in some brighter contrasting color... to make it really pop out. Maybe a pastel blue or green... or just white.

^ ^! oop... I'll stop now before I get too bad. I'm pretty much thinking out loud.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Caregan In reply to Rurouni-Taki [2011-06-12 11:32:23 +0000 UTC]

thinking out loud is good! no-one here ever talks about what characters are wearing in pictures, and to be honest i doubt half of the artists even think about it at all when drawing, so this is nice *^ ^*
yeah, a scarf would work, but i think it might make the outfit look a bit formal (not that that's bad, of course!)... i was going for a more casual daytime feel ^ ^
a cardigan doesn't have to be bulky - i was thinking of the really thin ones you can get from cheapo places like primark (does primark exist in the usa?) which tend to fall apart after a week or two!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rurouni-Taki In reply to Caregan [2011-06-12 15:08:34 +0000 UTC]

Ah, you're right. I'm used to the knit ones... but I know what you're talking about. I actually have a little thin one like that... but it still has large floppy short-sleeves.

I guess it's not actually BULKY... but I still feel like it makes the shoulders get lost a bit more than even a poofy sleeve like in the pic.

Oh! ... but I have seen like cardi-vest type things before. Sleeveless ones. I think that would be cute with the outfit. Especially an off-white, creamish one for pop.

I've really never thought of scarves as formal either. I suppose they're just a very very uncommon accessory where I live... usually older people are the ones wearing them here ( in fact, mostly older people wear cardis too ), but I've seen lots of fresh looking outfits using scarves in asain designer stuff.

Very cute! Does Art Nouveau = Hipster?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Caregan In reply to Gogol500 [2011-06-09 17:45:27 +0000 UTC]

art nouveau = the artistic style popular roughly a hundred years ago (1890-1905), characterised by flowing shapes, ornamentation, flower motifs etc... basically it's what came before the modernism and industrial lines of art deco.

while hipster is such an american kind of word, i had a bit of trouble fitting it into my mental landscape - i was reading the wikipedia article and thought oh, them... twats, at which point i noticed that wikipedia thoughtfully mentions that the uk archetype is the "shoreditch twat". anyway, no, kate would not be a hipster, seeing as hipsterism seems to revolve around in-crowd snobbery about what music you listen to and that sort of thing - she wouldn't really care or think it worth judging people on
that's just how people dress around here...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gogol500 In reply to Caregan [2011-06-09 17:55:59 +0000 UTC]

Ah, okay... wasn't sure if "art nouveau" was slang for hipster over there, much like rah = preppie (which I never heard of until [link] ). But shoreditch twat, that's even better!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Caregan In reply to Gogol500 [2011-06-09 18:39:45 +0000 UTC]

you'd not heard of art nouveau? you've been missing out... google "mucha"!
you could be forgiven for not knowing rah - its use is probably confined to a certain class and maybe even just certain universities in the uk (that is: where you find the rahs themselves...)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Drakenmark In reply to Caregan [2011-06-12 00:30:00 +0000 UTC]

In the circles I move in, "rah" is used to describe players and devotees of rugby union. It's not intended as a compliment!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Caregan In reply to Drakenmark [2011-06-12 11:14:10 +0000 UTC]

rah in my circles isn't meant as a compliment either... e.g. this brilliant series of sketches about gap yah rahs: [link] ...i have known so many (probably too many) people who act and sound exactly like this :S

so in your use of rah, is it still for posh rugby players? (we call them rugger buggers) if not, do you know why you call them rahs? would be interested to know...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Drakenmark In reply to Caregan [2011-06-13 00:27:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, definitely. The assumption was that rugby union player = public school, and all that went with it. Whereas the real people (ie, us!) played rugby league, naturally.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Caregan In reply to Drakenmark [2011-06-13 07:24:46 +0000 UTC]

ah, interesting... it's probably the same derivation then (from hoorah or yah). i knew there was a difference between union and league rugger, but i admit i had to look it up to see how it was different! i don't think i've ever seen league (no rucking and mauling? few scrums? where's the fun in that?!)
