Ubuntu puts you in a box from the get go.
On the other hand, Arch makes you build the box yourself. If you've not touched UNIX before I'd suggest starting with something a little less hardcore, like #! linux (google it) and going from there, you have to set up pretty much everything except GNUcoreutils. Good fun, not for newbies. Go read the arch wiki and decide for yourself though.

Not necessarily, you just need to download the iso and install it. Archlinux.org should have all the info you need on their wiki and elsewhere, but getting set up can take quite a while if you don't know what you're doing.
