Description 8"x10" prismacolor pencils on illustration board. My mother is part Apache and she exposed me to a lot of Native American art. The idea of a totem, or story pole, is fascinating to me. This is a little self-portrait rendition of one.

is illustration board like bristol board? I love how with just pencils you mange a watercolor "texture" in the sky, and a saturation of color everywhere else. Do you use a scumbling technique to do the clouds?

Illustration board is much thicker than bristol. It's layers pressed together sort of like cardboard but with a durable white surface. You can get it at Hobby Lobby or order it from places like Jerry's Artarama online.

Wow...what a wonderfful totem pole! i like how there's a turtle on the bottom...slow and steady, they win the race, and i like how the buildings and things are coming out of him. I guess that it is true, how turtles hold so much on their backs...their own homes, in fact! imagine if we carried out homes around? actually, that makes me really wonder...if we carried our homes around...would we still have as many needs...of would we just need a cosy little shell, like this guy?

We would be much more grateful for everything we have. That's one of the reasons I love camping. If you can just stay warm and eat you are content. Such a great way to put life into perspective.

That's an awesome-looking totem pole of yourself; I love how you used different ideas to express something about yourself. I love the vivid colors, too.

If I may ask... what does the turtle signify?

A turtle was my first pet, and my first experience with death. I had him when I lived in California and he died while we were moving to Florida. When we got there, my parents bought 4 acres and we had tortoises always coming through our yard and I would run out to feed them veggies whenever I could. I have always admired turtles for their strength and relentless effort to 'get the job done'.
