"During the Clone Wars, the Open Circle Group was the largest and most powerful group within the Grand Army of the Republic. But much like the Clone Army, it's lost much of its grandeur. But its pride and efficiency has never waned!" - Senator Etan, diplomatic representative of the 501st Legion describing the Open Circle Group.
The 501st Fleet Group, to the average military tactician, might seem surprised by the size of the fleet group. Typically the 501st Fleet Group has twice as many ships than the average group. The reason for this is because the 501st Fleet Group is actually two groups acting as one. 501st Avenger Group which is comprised strictly of Empire era former Imperial Warships and Open Circle Group which is comprised of retrofit, modernized, and preserved Clone Wars era Old Republic Warships. When necessary, the 501st Fleet Group can split off into their separate groups.
Typically Open Circle Group operates in tandem with Avenger Group, with Avenger Group dishing out heavy damage on enemy fleets while Open Circle Group lends fire support. When dealing with surface combat, Open Circle Group takes the lead, deploying the bulk of the 501st's ground forces while Avenger Group keeps the skies clear of hostiles.
Open Circle Group is so named in homage to the old Open Circle Group of the Grand Army of the Republic from during the Clone Wars. The ships in OCG are all approaching 50 years old but are just as formidable now as they were when first deployed fifty years ago, thanks in no small part to the tender love and care given to them by the 501st Legion who have preserved these ships as a reminder of their much more glorious past and proud beginnings. The modern OCG even uses the older incarnation's insignia only in dark blue instead of red.
Open Circle Group is led by Captain Phasma, a member of the 501'st Stormtrooper Corps and Commander Delta's second-in-command and protégé. Phasma is unique in that she is not only a female but also a non-clone, having been adopted into the legion as an infant. Phasma has proven herself a loyal and proud member of the legion, having known only her duty. She is fully aware that she could leave the Legion at any time but she chooses to stand beside the men she considers her brothers and has gone so far as to memorize the designation numbers of every Stormtrooper under her command. She sometimes leads by example, not at all above performing routine duties such as guard duty outside the C.O.'s Office on the Tatooine Avenger.
