Description
Ravenna Mosaic 3

Ravenna is a small city in north-eastern Italy. It was an important centre during the late Roman / early Byzantine period and has eight UNESCO World Heritage sites. These are mainly early Christian churches, which show the development and conflict of ideas through art.

This picture shows the main mosaic in the apse of the Basilica of Sant Vitale. Although called a basilica the building is octagonal with a dome, not rectangular. It was built from 526 to 547 CE.  The mosaic shows strong influences from classical Rome and Greece rather than the medieval style that was to follow in the west or the more rigid iconography of Byzantium in the east. At this time Ravenna was still under the control of the Goths, who clearly were not the ignorant barbarians that later history tried to make them out to be.

The combination of art in the city and relaxing at near beach is the best of this mosaic-town
