Description This is the apse of the 6th century Basilica of St. Apollinare in Classe, near Ravenna (Italy). It was built by the Byzantines after troops of emperor Justinian regained Italy from the Ostrogoths and the Exarchate of Ravenna was established. Classe was an important port where merchant ships from (or to) Constantinople, Greece and Africa docked. Inside the church relics of St. Apollinaris were kept. The city remained a Byzantine possession until it was taken by the Lombards. In later medieval period the church was taken care of by monks of the Benedictine order.

For me, this monument of Byzantine culture is an important reminder of how much of Byzantine art was destroyed by later Arab and Western invasions. Classe was not an extravagantly rich city and similarly decorated churches, basilicas, cathedrals and monasteries must have existed across the whole Byzantine Empire in many towns of Northern Africa (especially in Carthage), Egypt (Alexandria) and the Middle East (Antioch, Jerusalem, Tyre, Bethlehem where some Byzantine art is preserved). The period known as the ‘dark ages’ following the fall of the Western Roman empire in fact glittered with Byzantine gold and I could never convince myself that the Islamic invasion had such a positive impact of reviving the ‘forgotten’ Greek knowledge . I really appreciate the great achievements of Islamic culture in the medieval ages but still, I think Byzantium is highly underrated. Anyway – sorry for making this post so long – I do hope you like this photo !

I've always wondered what a Byzantine home or government building would look like, especially the Emperor's Palace in Constantinople. Would it look this extraordinary and airy, or would it be more homely and dark? That is the question.

BricksandStones In reply to CaptainDavidJones [2018-08-19 17:04:59 +0000 UTC]

That is indeed a very good question! I often imagine the imperial palace as airy and extraordinarily colourful - there are some historic descriptions of it, mentioning for example various automata designed to impress visitors... They do not provide, however, many detailed information about the more private parts and daily routine in the palace.... Thank you very much for taking the time to write a comment - I appreciate it All the best!

That's how I imagine it as well.

No problem, thanks for being so friendly!

Look carefully at the very center of the Cross: there is a small picture of Christ. This was the very first time Christ is shown on the Cross.

Thank you for the comment! I had no idea this is the earliest depiction of Christ on the Cross, if I would have known I would certainly mention it in the description, thank you for letting me know! I remember that in Ravenna there is a very rare, mosaic depiction of Christ as a soldier wearing armour (but no sword, of course) and I also enjoyed the image of Christ in Hosios David in Thessaloniki. Sadly in both cases tourists are not allowed to make photos so I had to sneak and the quality of the images I took is not good enough for DA... Anyway, thank you very much once again for the comment, once again, I learned something new from you!

Thank you very much, it is one of the earlier photos I uploaded and I am very glad that someone still finds it interesting There are numerous beautiful mosaics in Ravenna but somehow most of my photos of them seem rather 'flat', I am sure a more taleneted photographer would be able to make numerous great photos there. As for me, this was one of the best I could select... What I like about Ravenna is that it is one of the few Byzantine cities which was not ravaged by iconoclasts and Islamic forces so much of its old town and monuments preserved this unique, late Antique feel.... Also most depictions of figures still have their eyes and heads which is often not the case in the east.... Anyway, thank you once again and sorry for taking so long to reply!

Your replies are always alive, your heart beats in them somehow. I can wait for them. I share your joy that the figures have survived. (I mentioned - another of your photos - Jervaulx Abbey. It was destroyed but the monks managed to move the Screen to a small church in Aysgarth, some distance away. I saw it this summer. It looks so strange in a parish church but it is still intact and that`s what matters.)

Well... Thanks, I suppose? I am sorry for the reservation but I am not sure I like being called dear boy by strangers... still, I am glad you like Byzantine architecture, I am great admirer of it as well - it is a shame so much of it is destroyed or endangered by destruction. Also, I often wonder if the fate of these monuments would be better if there would be more unity among Orthodox peoples? Athens, Constantinople, Kiev, Moscow - so many patriarchates!

I am sure you would love it! Apart from San Vitale the Arian Baptistry is pretty cool as well. I am not sure if its as cool as Rome though - I have been in Rome long time ago and back then I did not have a camera so I do not have any photos - your shots on the other hand are cool and make me want to travel there again! Thank you for the comment - I really appreciate it! Also, I am sorry for late response, I moved flats recently and had little time for DA... Thanks again!

Hi! Thank you for the comment! It is a pity there is no separate group on DA devoted to Byzantium... There was a time when I wanted to organize one but in the end I realized I do not have enough free time for it. I think Byzantine art and architecture is quite amazing and ought to be promoted more... Anyway, thanks again!

Jfmam In reply to BricksandStones [2014-03-13 09:06:47 +0000 UTC]

That's all right. I really liked the photos you'd taken. I must admit that I'm more of an enthusiast for Rome than Byzantium per se; I like to see them both as one continuum, evolving over time. That said, 'Byzantine' art and architecture is certainly distinct, and rather beautiful in my opinion. I should really look into it more.

BricksandStones In reply to Jfmam [2014-03-13 23:00:58 +0000 UTC]

I see, one of my favorite periods is 6th C. when new kingdoms where already established in the West but Byzantium continued to fight with Sassanid Persia and recaptured Africa and Italy - there are some great monuments left from that time including the monastery in Sinai (Egypt) and Hagia Sophia. Most of the ancient libraries, theaters or hippodromes were still functional so there was much continuity with the earlier centuries.  Many ancient cities like Beit She'an or Cesarea were still inhabited before being abandoned in the Arab period.... Anyway thanks again for the conversation! Rome is a fascinating subject and it is good to know that people find it interesting

Yeah, it's that mixture of change and continuity that is fascinating to me. Still, I really need to read further into this subject, to gain a better knowledge and insight. This conversation with you has helped with that. Thanks again!

Whenever I see churches (or basilicas or any other type of buildings with this type of destination) that were build in that period
I'm truly shocked - because the later constructions, with all their glory, gold dripping from the ceiling and fine details striking the eye
no matter where you look are just... A lame imitation of this xD (now, now, don't you go and hang me for this - it's not that I underestimate
those magnificent pieces of art that were build in medieval times and later).
Antique and early medieval periods - especially when it came to Eastern church - made an excelent use of space, colors, shapes and
of what was written in the Bible (it's just that when I look upon those paintings or statues I can see and feel all the joy of being a
believer). It speaks to he viewer, and it tells a story of times when humanity was on a higher level of spirituality than in the later
eras (again - it's just something I'm feeling when I look at this, just my opinion).

BricksandStones In reply to Searleit [2013-06-13 15:11:18 +0000 UTC]

I think I understand what you mean, there is extensive literature on the theology of light and the meaning of gothic architecture there is a bit less material on the religious meaning of late antique churches. I quite like the strong feeling of link with the Roman tradition in their architecture. Also, I like the basilicas of Ravenna becouse in other similar churches in the East, for example in Betlehem or in Sinai, there are chandeliers and candles which, to me at least, obscure the general impression of the building. Again, do not get me wrong, I quite enjoy eastern misticism but ancient mosaics and details are sometimes less visible in orthodox churches...Anyway, thank you very mich for taking your time to write such well phrased comment - I really appreciate it!

Searleit In reply to BricksandStones [2013-06-24 08:02:15 +0000 UTC]

YW yes, I agree with you.
...you know, when looking at those older structures
I can't shake the feeling that we've got much to
learn about them - that there's a deeper meaning
behind all those religious scenes, something
we're not ready to discover. It's kind of amazing and
creepy at the same time.

If you will ever go there post some photos on DA I think you would like it, I for one, really enjoyed Ravenna, to some extend even more than Venice or other famous Italian cities (at least those few that I have seen). Thank you, friend. Byzantium is one of my favourite topics, though I refrain from using the term "Byzantine" being that it is a modern connotation of the Eastern Roman Empire. I hope Europe will still be one peace if I ever go to visit, for I have never been there, but I blew my chance 13 years ago when I would have been to Italy and Greece.

Greetings from the 51st State.
