Description Starcraft 2: Kerrigan De-Zerged
Modeled by Phill Gonzales, final texture pass by Ted Park!
Animated by Jay Hathaway

The cinematic department designed Kerrigan's De-Zerged look, the main challenge creating this character was adapting the cinematic model into a game character. Many details were exaggerated so they were more noticeable from game view, such as her armor pieces, hair, gun, breasts.

I love how "de-zerged" Kerrigan looks in the cinematics--the glowing stripes on her Ghost suit (and Tosh's Spectre armor) look awesome, and the game sprite looks great in play! Great work to you and everyone else that worked on her! Β

Sarah's breasts are large only in her in-game model because they needed her "feminine features" to be noticeable from the standard gameplay camera view.

Do the CMC guys make special armor for people with problems with giant boobs?

On a completely unrelated note, except for being Starcraft 2: HoTS related: Did you work on the skins for the Supply Depot, Overlord and the Pylon?

Boarguts In reply to Sdaerfhero [2013-06-02 19:21:49 +0000 UTC]

Special armor is made of course!

I didn't' work on the farm skins for HoTS, those were done by Steve Provost who doesn't have an art gallery I can link to. He's blow'n it.

Must be a pretty lucrative market, considering the amount of big-breasted women in video-games.

Oh. Also, another question, is there going to be more skins? One that I would enjoy, if I were to get the game, would be an SCV Skin that gave them the Dual-Fusion Cutter arm.

I think there will eventually be more skins.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate more skins--maybe as a downloadable add-on pack? I'm on a fixed income so money for important things like gaming is limited (have to spend most of it on bills and such ), but I'd be willing to shell out a few bucks for a reasonably-priced skin pack if it had a good assortment. (But if Blizzard does go for the idea, you HAVE to have the Tauren Marine and Grunty skins!)

That's good news to me. By comparison, the Terrans have at least 15 buildings and 13 units, but only 3 of those 28 things have some customizability. Adding more cosmetics like that would add a greater sense of "personalization" to others and in turn add on to StarCraft II's already enormous replay value. Take Team Fortress 2, for example!

If it's not giving away too many trade secrets, can I ask what texture resolution you used to make this lovely lady?

I'm gonna take a wild stab in the dark and guest that she got her very own 1024... but that may be pushing it.

Flipping amazing model though, texture n' all.

Most of the units in SC2 use 1024s! You were quite correct sir.

To be honest, even with all of the exxageration, she still seemed pretty small during some end-mission cinematics. Took me a while to notice her, and I was like, "wait, who's that gray little blob over there...? Ohh, right, it's Kerrigan".
Nevertheless, sweet job. That gun is sweet as all hell.

masakari-prime In reply to kitxunei [2013-03-12 16:58:23 +0000 UTC]

I'm a guy and they are too big, even from an "exaggerated" mindset due to RTS camera distance. They're just too big.

The rest of the model + textures are great, though.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kitxunei In reply to masakari-prime [2013-03-12 17:01:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. The breasts on Nova's model seem to be smaller, and I think it conveys her female form just fine. But maybe Kerrigan's just supposed to have huge ones. |D

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Boarguts In reply to kitxunei [2013-03-12 18:33:45 +0000 UTC]

RTS camera distance is always a factor, but additionally Kerrigan ends up being surrounded by swarms of Zerg so it was even more important that she be noticed. Believe me when I say that this was something that was adjusted several times to get to the in-game result.

The new Nova model is seen in a different context, so we could go lighter on her exaggerated features.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

masakari-prime In reply to Boarguts [2013-03-14 13:33:31 +0000 UTC]

Yep, I'm sure you guys did tons of back and forth on such an important character model.

Can't wait to kickass with her in-game, I'm still waiting for my Collectors Edition to arrive.

Any chance of posting some texture flats / UV layouts for some of the units? I've always done more photorealistic work, and want to improve my hand-painting skills.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Boarguts In reply to masakari-prime [2013-03-16 19:48:46 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately I'm not permitted to show textures/UV layouts/or Wireframes. Although if you happen to see them by using the art previewer, that's fine.
