Description Painting of the campus after it rained.

I've been under pressure to get things finished for other classes (including a quilt I will upload once I get a picture of it), and I think it shows in this painting.

I love your work. I adore your self-portrait, your telephone wire paintings, your landscapes and this one, in which you capture the look of the street after it rains so magnificently! Your colors are so clean, no mud. I always had trouble fighting the mud because I over mixed my paint, but you have a light hand and so your paintings are clear and beautiful.

Thank you very much!
When I face the risk of making mud--which does happen, especially in oil, I just stop and take a break and come back when it's dryer.

That's an extraordinary painting. Absolutely lovely.

I love rain. Puts me in a good mood, I'm not made cheerful by the sun like most. Rain really cheers me up. And this is wonderfully cheery to me.

What campus?

I can't say that I'm a fan of all rainy days, but this painting shows just the kind I love.

The campus is in northern Missouri: Truman State University.

this is really incredible. the colours and general mood of it fit so well, it looks just how those rainy, damp days always look. my favorite bit has to be the puddles, they're done spectacularily well.

This is so good, I don't believe its a painting. I feel likes its a blurry photo, this gives me such a weird home feeling. I don't know why. Your art feels very academic.

The challenge of making something look "wet" is part of what makes it fun to paint

Thanks! I appreciate your comments

I experimented some last night on some thick paper (so i don't waste my canvas ) like you told me, blocking shapes and building, and I did okay but not great. I found that I lose the background pretty easily. Must practice. Practice practice practice. One day years from now I'll be walking through a lobby of some huge hotel or corporate complex or fancy restaurant, and there on the wall will be a Lisa Payne original, spotlighted. I'll say "hey, I know that artist. She tried to teach me a few things once!", and whoever I'm with will go "yeah right, and I guess Rembrandt loaned you some brushes too huh?". They won't believe me, but I'll know.

i think the bottom half of the piece feels extremely overworked. there is a looseness captured in the trees, especially in the areas where you went back over the forms with white to show the sky peaking through, the brushwork is so spontaneous and fun that the rest of the painting kinds suffers.

though, i think you captured that "reflection on wet concrete" very well. thers alot of good stuff goin on allover, i just think the bottom is a little bit weaker. hmm.

good times.

blindedangel In reply to coolkatcasey [2004-04-24 14:47:32 +0000 UTC]

I had the most fun in the trees. I think I learned a lot with this.
I also went back and corrected some things, this is an ealier version. But I agree, the bottom is weak.

its phenominal girl.. you really have such a handle on your style of painting.
you completely captures the atmosphere, and the wet nature of everything.

you are so radical.

Sometimes you look at a painting and it brings back memories so strong you think you've been there before. This painting is like that for me. It brings to mind a rainy afternoon that I toured a campus in South Carolina with my daughter. She was thinking of going there. It looked very much like this. The gloomy sky. The reflections in the puddles on the sidewalk.

It's a great painting!
