Character ref for Umiko!!! Ya'll saw the first glimpse of her just the other day with this chibi!~

Umiko Shima is a Japanese woman in her thirties. She was raised by a strict father but lenient mother and eventually became a prominent figure in a business with a high position of power. She excelled at academics and everything in life due to an extremely rigid upbringing on her father's part and high expectations set of her. Though she was never happy, and never felt 'right'. Her whole life Umiko felt some disassociated and never felt like she belonged in society, especially not the way she had shaped her life. The happiest moments of her life were early childhood memories of her mother sneaking the two of them to visit their nearest beach in-between errands whenever possible. The sea was her one true love and one she fell for immediately, the only solace she found from her boring and highly studious childhood was Mom and her's trips behind Dad's back. Umiko became a proficient swimmer surfer and even spear-fisher around merely age ten. She lost it all though as she grew older and life took priority, to most the fun would become a distant memory but to Umiko those memories were all that she could retreat to in her most stressful moments. She'd cnstantly be guilty of dozing off and daydreaming of the beach during meetings and important interviews.

Around her early 20s Umiko's life changed overnight the day she had to meet with a high profile client on their personal yacht. Trying to impress with their luxuries and wealth, though it fell on deaf ears because Umiko could not take her eyes off the waves and beauty that surrounded them from all sides. She always dreamed of going on a boat, but mother could never afford to give her the chance. She was captivated, so much so that she jumped off the side of the yacht in her full business suit and swam back to shore. She never reported back to work, and never returned to her single housing apartment. She went off the record and became a beach bum. To all who knew her, and especially her father they saw Umiko as throwing her life away. But to her it was the day she finally started living.

For a time she was never more at peace, but the solace kept being broken by both people in her life trying to change her mind and return back to normal society, to no avail. As well as by the media and gawkers coming to look at the 'freak show' woman. There even eventually became a sort of cult of Umiko trend in Japan after her massive media coverage, tons of people flocked to her saying they wanted to have a peaceful life like her, too, and asking for help with living off the land (or sea, I should say) the way she does. It got to be so hectic that one day she created her own make-shift boat, she customized to look exactly like the one she would draw pictures of her entire childhood she wished she could have and sailed the sea for the first time on her own. She waved goodbye finally as she for the first time truly could be free.

Umiko began her nomadic lifestyle, traveling by boat to different small coastal areas to camp out and bum out on the beaches for a few months before setting sail once again for the next one, wherever the waves may take her. The new lifestyle kept her away from the public spotlight, there were 'sightings' of the weird Ocean Lady every so often reported and pictures snapped, but in general she finally broke free of the system like she wanted. Umiko has no true friends in life besides the sea creatures she loves so much. The beach-folk, surfers, and those who live off the sea as well and respect it to the degree she does in the more rural areas though have a great relationship with her and always look forward to the day she passes through their communities once again. She's an icon to many people. She lives entirely on her own now, eating what she catches and spending all time by the sea.

Umiko has a reverence for the ocean and nature in general, she has zero tolerance for polluters and people who disrespect it. She is considered one of the best surfers in the world, at this point because she spends more time doing it than even the most die-hard surfers. She's an idol to the surfing community all over the globe, especially ever since she interrupted one year's championships in Japan by showing up out of nowhere and outperforming the two finalists. She won first place, but said she only did it for fun so let second place have the trophy. Umiko's able to hold her breath for over ten minutes underwater. She can also swim extremely long distances without seeming to get tired. She's very multi-talented, due to her rigid upbringing she's got an insanely high i.q. which people don't ever expect given her homeless and ragged looks and lifestyle. She is multi-lingual because of her prior business dealing with international clients, notably she is fluent entirely in English. She has a very weird way of speaking and likes to mix her languages together into one single sentence which makes her really odd to communicate with. She says weird hippie stuff in general, too. She also likes playing tricks on people and being mischievous, she's a master of sarcasm and dry wit and likes to pull people's legs. The strangest quirk of all though comes with her relationship to certain animals. She communicates with all sea creatures, talking even to the slugs and smallest of creatures as close friends. She's most notorious though for her habit of 'talking' to Whales. Umiko has a wooden guitar she's carried everywhere with her, that she plays for the whales and sings to at night. Sightings of it usually illicit people calling her insane, until they see the Whales start to sing back to her and they perform together. Though they actually do happen, few people believe the stories of those who see it for themself.

Umiko is a very important character in a future arc of Astronautical!! I won't go into spoilers with that, but I will just at least share how much of an infatuation Ace has haha! Ace when he meets Umiko is completely starstuck. Not just because she's super hot, but because he first discovered her on a Youtube video from Japanese news ten years ago and immediately fell in love. He's had a massive crush on her ever since and even used to always claims her in waifu threads on various imageboards... It's EMBARRASSING. But Umiko doesn't mind haha. Sharon's jealous though! Umiko loves to compete with Cephie when they meet and is happy to finally meet someone who can outmatch her in something for a change again. Tracie and Rachel love playing tricks with her and learning all sorts of cool tricks and facts she's learned from her life on the sea! And Squish loves to have another person she can tomgirl out with.

I'm so glad Umiko finally has a reference, it's been needing to be made for months haha I am seriously so in love with her so expect lots more art of her in the future!

If it wasn't obvious yet I think Ace's obsession with her might be a bit self-reflective of myself OOPS
Can you blame me though.

I think this might be the most "me" character that I've ever made.
