Description

askjdh THAT WAS A REALLY RUSHED APP SOB.

Magic Circle Brush from redheadstock

-------------

[ Basic Information ]

Name: Katarine Weiss
Date of Birth: November 27
Age: 29
Gender: Female
Height: 5'3'' with heels
Weight: 108 lbs

[ Magical Information ]

Status: Witch
Occupation: Professor of Spell Composition
Dorm: B5
Rank: 1

Magical Ability:

  • Illusion Magic: Enchantments to bewilder the senses into believing what the caster wishes their target to see. The more believable the illusion, the more complex the spell behind it.
  • Magic Seals: The user draws magic seals or circles--the terms are used interchangeably--to trap targets, form barriers, or even trigger large-scale spells.
  • Spell Negation: Utilizing knowledge of the exact components that make up a particular spell, the user can formulate a spell of their own to either negate or dispel individual elements of the targeted magic, and thus render it useless.

Limitations:
  • With the exception of the basic enchantments, the exacting nature of Katarine's magic of choice gives her a very slow 'setup' time compared to more conventional spells. Want a heavy duty locking seal set up? A means to cancel out a particularly nasty spell? She's going to need at least a week's advance notice for any of that.
  • Powerful magic seals can lie dormant for years without need for much magical expenditure, but they can cause severe drain to the caster's energy stores the moment they are triggered.
  • Strong physical stimuli--either on the caster or the target--can cancel or at least severely weaken the effects of illusion-based magic. The level of concentration that is required to maintain such spells often leaves the caster in a vulnerable state, which can be exploited to devastating effects in combat.

Magical Aid: A jet-black spider that doesn't seem to do more than sit on Katarine's shoulder or spin webs on her desk from time to time. She insists that it's quite useful for crafting magic circles however, and doesn't take kindly to vocal reactions about its appearance.

[ Personal Information ]

Personality:
[+] level-headed, practical, eager learner and educator, straightforward, persistent
[ - ] creature of habit, lacking empathy, distant, inattentive, strict

The woman known as Katarine Weiss appears to be quite distant at first encounter. And the second. Probably even the third, too. She was never a very empathetic person by nature, but the formative years spent with her great-grandmother has only exacerbated that tendency. She doesn't really understand (nor does she care to understand) physical displays of affection, but she is slowly grasping that the occasional kind word can help brighten dispositions. It's a work in progress. An extremely level-headed and practical person by nature.

Katarine has a rather flexible sense of right and wrong, and is only reigned in by the necessity for her to be a good model for the students under her wing. She is very much open to considering new concepts or ways of thinking that are different from her own, and will all too easily admit that the knowledge she possesses is inconsequential compared to that which she does not know. An equally willing teacher and learner. Katarine demands high quality work from her students--but only because she has equally high expectations of them.

Strengths: composed, efficient, focused, cooks well...when she remembers to eat at all
Weaknesses: highly disorganized, very sensitive to smells, skewed sense of priorities, can't crack a joke to save her life

Likes: tea, arachnids, libraries, old book smell, chinaware
Dislikes: cluttered messes that aren't her own, dogs (mildly allergic), erratic noises, sloppiness

History:
Katarine was the result of a relationship that was already in shambles by the time she let out her first cry. Her parents met as first college students who--excited to see how far their newfound freedoms could stretch--spent just a few too many nights together. It ended in tears of course when the couple realized that their actions had consequences beyond what they had expected. The only reason that Katarine's ties to anything remotely like family weren't cut then and there was the result of outside interference--more specifically, from her mother's grandmother. She was a strict, convention-abiding, church-going woman who put her foot down when Katarine's mother emphatically stressed that she wanted to give the child up for adoption. The older woman claimed that she would raise the baby herself then--she'd done just fine with her own three, so what was one more?

Most of Katarine’s early years were spent under the watchful eye of her great-grandmother, who took care of her while her mother and father often had bitter fights that would eventually result in a permanent split. Her great-grandmother was a strict woman; the kind of person who condemned loud talking, running around, playing with one’s food and pretty much everything that young children were expected to do. Needless to say, Katarine’s childhood was rather lacking at best. The only thing that her great-grandmother ever seemed to encourage was the pursuit of knowledge, so Katarine settled for entertaining herself with the complex books that she found on the shelves in her great-grandmother's home.

It never occurred to her that they were anything beyond the scope of what was considered 'normal'. Her great-grandmother took it into stride when she asked questions and wanted more than just one-sentence answers. She even let her draw out a basic circle seal one time, managing a rare and weathered smile as the enchanted lines glowed beneath Katarine's feet. The old woman made Katarine promise to never speak of this to others--and Katarine promised. It was the only secret the two of them ever shared, because a few months later, she fell asleep in her chair and never woke up again. At the age of seventeen, Katarine was all alone again. In her grief, she surrounded herself with the old books she'd studied--the ones that she later found had been given to her in her great-grandmother's will. True to her word, Katarine never spoke of their shared moments again.

Her mother grudgingly took Katarine back into her custody, and things began their slow spiral out of control.

First, it was just the scenery outside the window. A dry summer day would suddenly flicker to images of heavy rain and thunderclouds. Even separated by glass, Katarine could somehow feel the damp droplets hitting her skin, and the muggy smell of petrichor against her nose. And then, as soon as the sensations came, they would disappear. The scenery would revert back to dry sidewalks. She wondered if it was synesthesia--she'd read about that in a book before. Maybe it would go away. She was scared to mention it to anyone. But it kept getting worse. Every time she shrank back into the corner of her mother's home to hide from the look of disgust that came from being an unwanted burden, the images started again. The colors became more vivid. The sensations stronger. Until sometimes she couldn't tell what was real and what wasn't anymore.

She wasn't sure if the letter was real either, when it came. Katarine read the instructions and sat there. For the longest time, she didn't move. And then suddenly, a desperate laugh. She was already crazy. What was there left to lose? Fumblingly, she gathered up the treasured books and what few changes of clothes she'd managed to bring with her from the move. There wasn't much else to bring. She left a scribbled 'goodbye' on a clean napkin at the kitchen table and was gone.

The inked napkin would be grabbed the next morning. There was no confusion. No searching for a daughter who suddenly wasn't there. Just a frustrated curse word as the paper was used to blot up an accidental coffee spill. The blue ink smeared. Turned unreadable under the heavy pigment of the coffee. It was tossed in the trash can without a second glance. She would sip the rest of her coffee. Flip through some crappy daytime television on a static-filled box. And maybe in a couple hours, she might remember to think about her daughter.

Maybe.

Katarine couldn't have cared less. Eterna was everything her wildest dreams couldn't begin to cover. She felt a sense of belonging that hadn't happened since before her great-grandmother's passing. Suddenly the circle seal on the floor made sense. The hallucinations made sense. She wasn't crazy. Just different. Here, there were people who understood.

Several years passed and a graduated Katarine considered her options. She could continue the research she's started during her time here as a student, and take on a teaching position at the Academia she had grown to treasure so much. Or she could go back to the place she came from, with an uncertain future ahead of her and nowhere to call her own. It was the easiest decision she'd ever had to make.
