Description On 10 January, 49 BC Julius Caesar led a single legion, Legio XII(13th legion)crossing the Rubicon river from Cisalpine Gaul to Italy to make his way to Rome. In doing so, he deliberately broke the law on imperium and made armed conflict inevitable.

For four-year-long Julius Caesar and his political supporters (broadly known as Populares), and his legions fought against the Optimates (or Boni), the politically conservative and socially traditionalist faction of the Roman Senate, who were supported by Pompey and his legions. in Italy, Illyria, Greece, Egypt, Africa, and Hispania.

This Civil war came from major social, political, and economic changes the late Republic was going through from the careers of brothers Gracchus, continuing with the Marian reforms of the legions, the bloody dictatorship of Lucius Cornelius Sulla, and the First Triumvirate control over Rome.

In end, Caesar won but his Assassination by a group of senators led to the Liberators' civil war and ultimately to the Principate period of the Roman Empire with his great-nephew Gaius Octavius becoming Caesar Augustus the first Roman emperor.
