I like what you were trying to do with the highlights; and color choices in general.
Have you studied the fundamentals? I know we more abstract thinkers tend to bristle in regards to doing that;
but I know that for me personally it really fleshes out my understanding of how things integrate well together... and thus: empowers my capacities to fulfill my visions for whatever creative endeavor I'm aiming to realize.
The main thing I notice here is not much transition from lights to darks; so the result to me is that the dark areas look more like they're smudges on top of his skin rather than part of it.
also the eyes don't seem to have any of the definition of the rest of the piece.

yeah i know, i've been meaning to go back and re-do some of it because there are a few parts that I didn't quite like after looking at it for a couple of days, like the eyes and some of the skin. I just figured out how to 'paint' and i'm still developing my style, but once i update it i'll let you know

Creepy! But looks great. You're really good with textures. Again I was surprised to see this was a digital painting.
