Not all eagles can be trained, but those who take to life with a master display intense loyalty. Although they are not tethered, they always return.
~ Stephen Kinzer
Through my years of working with birds of prey, one of my favourite eagles will always be the bald eagle.
They are perfect for educating public about just how wonderful eagles are, and what we can do right when it comes to conservation.
In the 18th Century, it is estimated that there were around 500,000 bald eagles in the wild.
By the 1950's, there were a total of 412 nesting pairs in the lower 48 states.
This decline was due to hunting, persecution, and pesticides; just to name a few factors!
However, with the banning of dangerous pesticides, the enforcement of the Northern States Bald Eagle Recovery Plan, and the work of many conservationists, the population has rebounded!
The bald eagle was removed from the list of species classed as 'Endangered' in 2007.
Look what we can do if we just put our minds to it.
